Think of the person you still have so much to tell. The one whose name you skip in conversation because your voice changes, or mention with a smile and then gaze out of the window for a long time. You have already thought of someone, haven’t you? Perhaps you even remembered what they used to call you — that particular way of addressing you that no one else says quite the same. Hold them in your thoughts for a moment. Our story begins with them.

Outside, an October evening is falling, the mist swallows the outlines of the trees, and a candle flame is reflected in the lit window. Imagine finding a sealed envelope on the table in front of you. You know the handwriting. Your heart has already read the name before your eyes reach it. What could be written inside? The words you have waited for so long, an answer to a question you keep to yourself, or something so typical of this person that you will smile through your tears?

It is curious how memory keeps the small details. You forget whole days, yet you remember someone’s laughter from the kitchen, the sound of a key in the door, a hand on your shoulder. You also remember the advice you met with a roll of the eyes, sure that your life was clear enough. Today you would probably listen to it to the end. Well, almost all of it — after all, you have a character of your own.

What was left unfinished between you? Perhaps your last conversation was about entirely ordinary things, because you believed the important ones could wait. Perhaps you still long to tell them what you have achieved, to admit how hard things are, or simply to hear how this person would see your life now. Loss leaves questions that we keep carrying with us while everything around us changes.

In Halloween week I invite you on a journey beyond the mist of the unsaid. We will follow the words, the memories and the Tarot cards in a personal reading inspired by your bond with the person you miss. Think of it as a letter we unfold together — line by line, paying attention to what touches you and your life today.

Your letter beyond the mist

Look at the letter grid and choose the first three words that catch your attention. Leave them in the order you find them, even if the combination puzzles you. Tap a letter of each word to mark it, then write three different numbers from 1 to 78 for the Tarot cards. I will look at the meaning of your choice in my personal answer to you.

Step 1 · In the grid, tap the first three words that catch your attention

Leave them in the order you find them. Tap any letter of the word and the whole word lights up. A second tap removes it.

Step 2 · Write three different numbers from 1 to 78

The numbers are for the Tarot cards. In each of the three boxes, write the first number that comes to you.

Step 3 · Who do you miss, and what would you like to tell them

If you wish, add who the person you thought of is and what you would like to tell them. You can begin with “I still remember…”, “I wish you knew…” or with words of your own that have long been looking for a place. Share only what you are comfortable having visible in the comments; the name and the most personal details can stay yours.

Step 4 · Publish in the comments

When you are done, publish your choice with the button below the fields. To take part, sign in to your FatedWays profile. I will answer you personally under your comment on this page. The game is open until Sunday, 1 November, inclusive.

The envelope in your imagination is still sealed. Think of the person whose handwriting you recognised and choose your three words. How will your letter begin?
