The Road to the Sacred —
why does it pull me there?

Six images and seven positions of five cards each. The distance draws you for a reason that has no name yet; the image shows which one it is.

To the choice

Has it ever happened to you that you see a faraway place and are left with the feeling that you somehow already know it? That you look at a mountain, a temple, a city, a road or a small dot on the map and suddenly picture yourself there? Then you close the photograph, carry on with your day, and a few hours later you are thinking about the same place again. Your reason has probably already checked the flights, the weather in October and the price of the hotels, while another part of you asks the far more interesting question: “Why exactly there?”

“The Road to the Sacred” is for the person who senses that the distance is pulling at them for a reason they have not yet managed to name. You may dream of leaving because your life has grown too narrow. You may need quiet, freedom or a new beginning. A particular place may keep returning in dreams, conversations and strange coincidences. Or you may love the life you already have and still feel that you need to step away from it for a while in order to understand how you want to come back into it.

Six roads lead to six different reasons for looking beyond the familiar. The Pilgrim sets out in search of meaning. The Runaway wants air and freedom. The One on the Threshold already senses their next life. The Sign Hunter follows the repetitions and looks for the answer behind them. The Keeper of Silence needs a space in which to hear themselves again. The Returning One wants to see from a distance what they already have, and to decide what deserves to stay.

The spread will take you through seven important doors. You will find out where the call comes from, what you expect to find far away, the real reason behind the wish to go, what old baggage you carry with you, which decision waits for you on the threshold, what gift the road can bring and what kind of person you will be after it. Five cards in each position unfold the story far more deeply — through the wishes, the fears, the relationships, the practical decisions and those parts of you that begin to speak more loudly once the usual noise is kept at a distance.

And “The Return” is precisely the heart of this spread. Because you can cross half the world and come home with nothing but three hundred photographs, a fridge magnet and a suspiciously expensive scarf. You can also come back with a decision that changes the years ahead of you. With a different rhythm. With a new boundary. With a person you now value differently. With a dream that finally gets a date. Or with the simple and very important realisation: “I am ready to live closer to what genuinely matters to me.”

Look at the six images and choose the one your eyes keep returning to on their own. Imagine that tomorrow morning you wake up exactly there and the whole day belongs to you. Which place draws you before you start weighing up which is prettier, more sensible or more convenient? Choose one road and follow it. By the end you may find that the question was always bigger than “Where do I want to go?” It sounds like this: “Who am I now and how do I want to live from here on?”

Choose your image

Touch the image that draws you — and it will open right below here.

1 · The Pilgrim — You are looking for meaning

For you the faraway place is the image of a life in which you understand again why you do what you do. You may have reached a large part of the goals that once seemed important and still feel a strange emptiness between “everything is going well” and “this really fills me”. The work continues, the people around you are the same, daily life knows its lines by heart, and the inner question grows more insistent: “I have come this far, but where do I actually want to go on?” That is exactly why the temple, the mountain, the pilgrim route or the distant country begin to pull so strongly. You imagine that if you step far enough outside your usual life, you will be able to see the whole of it.

Your road begins with a call, passes through a meeting with your old beliefs and arrives at a very earthly ending. The meaning you are looking for has to find a place, step by step, in the way you work, love, spend your time and make decisions. Otherwise the spiritual journey risks staying a magnificent photograph that a month later you look at between two work messages, wondering why you are so tired again.

1. The call

CardsJudgement · Ace of Wands · The Star · 8 of Cups · The Fool

Judgement opens the period with a very strong inner reckoning. You begin to see your life from the height of the years behind you, and the question is already bigger than the next goal. What did you do because you genuinely wanted it? What did you chase because that is what a correct life looks like? Which of your own wishes did you leave for later? This card speaks of an awakening to your own story and of the sense that the next chapter has to be written more consciously.

Ace of Wands immediately adds a wish for movement. A spark returns in you that may have been hidden under the obligations for a long time. All at once you start looking at routes, reading about faraway places, imagining what your life would be like if you allowed yourself something completely different. This is already more than tiredness. An appetite for life is waking up in you.

The Star gives that call its hope. Part of you believes that the next period can be closer to the person you are. It draws you towards places that have symbolism, height, clarity, antiquity or a sense of connection with something larger. That is exactly why the Pilgrim rarely dreams only of a hotel with a nice pool. He wants to come back with a story that has changed something inside him.

8 of Cups says that at the same time you are already moving away from something. Some goal has lost its force. Some way of living no longer gives you the same feeling. Everything may even look good enough, and that is precisely what makes the decision harder. It is far easier to leave what is obviously bad. It is considerably harder to admit that something good is no longer enough for us.

The Fool closes the first position with the wish to try. You still do not know where this search will lead, but you begin to feel ready to live through something without a guarantee of the final result. Your call says: “I am ready to step off the familiar route and see what I will discover about myself.”

2. What you are looking for

CardsThe Hierophant · The High Priestess · 9 of Cups · Ace of Cups · The Sun

The Hierophant shows that you are looking for knowledge older than your personal worries. You may be drawn to a religion, a spiritual tradition, a philosophy, an ancient ritual, a teacher or a place towards which generations of people have set out with the same large questions. For a while you want to step out of your own plot and meet ideas that have survived centuries. This can give you the sense that your question is personal, while the human search behind it is far larger.

The High Priestess adds the inner knowing. You are looking for a moment in which the outer noise drops enough for you to feel what you already know. You may have been collecting opinions, analyses and advice, while the most important answer stayed somewhere underneath them. The faraway place promises you a meeting with your own intuition.

9 of Cups also shows a very human wish: to feel satisfied. You want to wake up in the morning and sense that your life is yours and that you like it. The great spiritual questions are wonderful, but deep beneath them there often lives something quite simple: “I want it to feel good to be me.”

Ace of Cups opens a new emotional period. The journey can wake up feelings that have long been pushed aside by the practical part of life. Love, gratitude, inspiration, the wish to create, to connect more deeply with people or to give more room to your own experiences.

The Sun completes the position with clarity and vitality. What you are truly looking for is the sense that life has light, direction and joy again. You want to understand what makes you feel alive, and then to start giving it more room.

3. The real reason

CardsThe Hermit · 4 of Cups · The Moon · 6 of Cups · 2 of Swords

The Hermit shows that the deep reason is the need to be alone with yourself. Over the last period you may have been too busy with what has to be done and too little with the question of who you became meanwhile. In time a person can perform their own life beautifully and feel it less and less.

4 of Cups hints at a dissatisfaction that is hard to explain through any particular lack. You can have enough and still feel that something essential is missing. This is the moment when a new phone, one more task or the next goal begin to lose their magical powers. The soul is evidently a rather demanding customer and remains unimpressed by all the special offers.

The Moon shows that under the dissatisfaction there live feelings that have not yet found a clear form. Fear of a life missed, a longing for another direction, a sense of having drifted away from yourself, or a wish you long considered impractical. The journey can bring up exactly these layers.

6 of Cups takes you back to an earlier version of yourself. What did you love before life became so serious? What did you want at twenty, thirty or forty and then set aside? What excited you when you were not yet measuring everything by usefulness? It may turn out that meaning is also connected with a return to a part of yourself you have forgotten.

2 of Swords shows that you already know about a choice you keep postponing. The real reason behind the spiritual search may be exactly this: you stand before a decision and you are tired of living between two directions. The faraway place becomes a space in which you hope to finally hear which one is yours.

4. The baggage

Cards10 of Wands · The Devil · 5 of Pentacles · 9 of Swords · 4 of Pentacles

10 of Wands shows the enormous load of responsibility that travels with you without caring about the weight limit on the ticket. Part of it is real, part has gathered through the habit of being the one who copes. You may have grown used to taking on more because you know how. Then you wonder why the thought of a monastery without a phone starts to sound so romantic.

The Devil adds an attachment to patterns you complain about and find hard to give up at the same time. Work, status, control, the need for recognition, a particular relationship or the habit of measuring your worth by results can go on dictating your decisions even when you already feel that the price is high.

5 of Pentacles shows the fear of loss. If you make a change, what happens to your security? The money? The work? The belonging? The approval? Part of you may link your present way of living with protection from uncertainty, and that is why change looks both wanted and risky.

9 of Swords brings the scenarios the mind creates at night. What if I make a mistake? What if I lose what I have achieved? What if it turns out I have been looking for something that does not exist? Anxiety can turn every new road into an international conference of all possible problems.

4 of Pentacles shows the last part of the baggage: the need to keep the familiar. You may want new meaning and at the same time try to leave every old construction absolutely unchanged. This position asks: “What am I ready to let go of, in order to free space for what I claim to be looking for?”

5. The threshold

CardsDeath · The Tower · 8 of Swords · 5 of Cups · 6 of Swords

Death shows the end of an old identity. The next period asks you to admit that the person you have been can no longer determine all the decisions of the person you are now. This may mean the end of an old goal, a role, a bond with your own past or an idea of success.

The Tower adds a moment of sharp insight. Some truth may become too clear for you to keep going around it. You may realise that for years you have been building something you no longer want at the centre of your life. This takes nothing away from your work. It simply changes the direction.

8 of Swords shows how strongly you can hold back the next step yourself. Part of the limits that look absolute can be looked at again. The threshold begins with the question: “Is it really that I cannot, or have I grown used to believing that I cannot?”

5 of Cups reminds you that change also brings grief for what you leave behind. Even the right decision can hurt. Even a wonderful new period can require saying goodbye to people, dreams or a version of the future you once loved.

6 of Swords gives the movement forward. After the realisation and the parting comes the moment to set off. It can be a physical journey, a change of surroundings or a very real transition to a different way of living. The threshold says: “I am ready to take what I have learned with me and go on.”

6. The gift of the road

CardsTemperance · The World · 3 of Wands · Queen of Cups · Ace of Pentacles

Temperance brings the different parts of you back into one shared rhythm. You begin to understand that meaning lives together with daily life. It has to be present in the way you work, love, rest, choose the people around you and use your time.

The World shows the completion of an important inner cycle. The journey can give you the sense that you have closed a chapter that stayed half open for a long time. This card also gives a real connection with abroad, a distant culture or an experience that widens your idea of what is possible.

3 of Wands turns your gaze forward. After what you have lived through you will no longer ask only what is missing. You begin to see what you can create. A new direction may appear, a course, a project, a journey, work or the wish to spend your life differently.

Queen of Cups restores the connection with your feelings. You begin to listen to your own reaction more carefully and to understand that your emotional sense also gives you information. This can change the way you choose people, work and surroundings.

Ace of Pentacles makes the gift concrete. A real beginning can come out of the journey: an idea for a new project, work, study, a move, a home or a change in the way you organise your life. The gift is the chance to give physical form to what you have understood inwardly.

7. The return

CardsThe Magician · 6 of Wands · King of Pentacles · 2 of Cups · 10 of Pentacles

The Magician shows a person who comes back with more sense of their own power. You no longer wait for someone else to explain to you what a meaningful life should look like. You begin to use what you are good at and to point it towards the direction you have chosen.

6 of Wands gives the confidence that you have passed an important inner test. You may feel pride in a decision you had long postponed, or in the fact that you set off alone towards an experience that once seemed too far away. That confidence will then take part in the rest of your decisions.

King of Pentacles matters a great deal, because it brings the Pilgrim back down to earth. After the spiritual questions comes the task of building a stable life that feeds your new values. The money, the work, the home and the way you organise your time have to start reflecting, step by step, what you have already understood.

2 of Cups shows that relationships can change as well. You may come to value a person beside you in a new way, meet someone during the journey or realise what kind of closeness you actually want. After the inner search you come back readier for mutuality and real presence.

10 of Pentacles gives a very strong ending: the meaning has to stay alive over time. It turns into a choice about what home you create, which people stay around you, what you pass on and what you want your life to be remembered for. That is already far beyond one journey.

The Pilgrim who has come back may be a person with the same passport and the same address, but with a different measure of success. He starts asking more often: “What I am doing — does it bring me closer to the life I consider meaningful?”

Practice and ritual: “The seven doors of my inner temple”

For the Pilgrim I would combine a practice with a small ritual, because with him analysis alone will not be enough. Take seven sheets of paper and write one word on each: Call, Faith, Truth, Baggage, Ending, Gift, Return. Lay them out in a row on the floor or on a large table. They will follow the seven positions of the spread.

On the first sheet, Call, finish the sentence: “I am ready to admit that it is no longer enough for me…” Write down the first thing that comes. On Faith answer: “I am ready to believe more in…” On Truth write: “When nobody decides how I should live, I am a person who wants…” On Baggage write down one belief, fear or duty you have been carrying for far too long. On Ending finish: “I am ready to conclude…” On Gift write what you want to bring more of into your life. On Return write down one concrete decision for the next thirty days.

Then read the seven sheets one after the other. See whether one shared story appears between them. You might, for example, begin with “work is no longer enough for me”, arrive at “I want to create”, then at “I am afraid of losing my security”, and finish with “I am starting my own project two hours a week”. That is already a road. Spiritual insights become considerably more cooperative once we give them a calendar.

Choose one small object that symbolises this change for you: a stone, a key, a small figure, a photograph from a journey or another object with personal meaning. Leave it somewhere you see often over the coming month. Every time you notice it, ask yourself one short question: “Did I give time today to what I call important?”

After thirty days go back to the seven sheets. See which sentence is still true, which has already changed and what you have actually done. If nothing has moved, then the next step has to be smaller and more concrete still.

You can end the ritual with the words: “I am ready to turn meaning into a way of living. I am ready to guard my time for what is truly valuable to me.”

The resolution

The Pilgrim’s resolution begins with the sense that the answer is somewhere far away — beyond the mountain, in an ancient temple, among another culture or along a road you have not yet walked. The thirty-five cards gradually turn the direction around. Judgement wakes you, the Hierophant and the High Priestess look for the knowledge, the Hermit brings you back to yourself, the heavy cards in the Baggage show what is in the way, Death and the Tower close an old period, Temperance and the World give a new wholeness, and the Magician, King of Pentacles and 10 of Pentacles turn the discovery into a life that can be lived for a long time. In the end the question “Where will I find the sacred?” gradually becomes “What am I ready to keep as sacred in my own life?”

Go on in the Game of the SoulIf you chose the Pilgrim and sense that your question is bigger than the journey itself, go on in the Game of the Soul FatedWays through The Celestial Teacher, where you can look at the period you are passing through and at the themes that now want more attention. If you are looking for which ability or direction of yours deserves more room, open Gifts as well. And if you sense that an old story has to be concluded before the new meaning can enter your life, Letting Go may be the next door. Pilgrimage begins with a question, but its true worth is measured by what you are ready to change after the answer.

2 · The Runaway — You are looking for a way out

For you the faraway place comes into your thoughts with one very concrete promise — air. You picture an early morning, a small station, a bus with an unknown destination, a suitcase at your feet and a few days in which nobody has decided in advance what you have to do. The picture itself brings relief. The Runaway appears after a long period in which you have been too available, too responsible and suspiciously good at sorting out other people’s problems. One relies on you, a second expects you to remember, a third is convinced that you of all people know the solution, and a fourth does not even ask whether you have the time. And so, little by little, the wish to travel starts to sound like: “I want my life to belong to me, at least for a while.”

This spread follows how the wish to leave has gathered, what freedom you are actually looking for, which inner limits will board the bus along with you and what decision you will have to make in order to come back to different terms. The Runaway’s story is interesting precisely because the distance first looks like a way out, and then gradually reveals a far more important question: “What kind of life do I have to create so that I no longer need to keep dreaming of vanishing from it?”

1. The call

Cards10 of Wands · 9 of Swords · 8 of Cups · 5 of Wands · The Tower

10 of Wands carries everything that has gathered over the last period. You have taken on more than it is sensible to carry for long, and part of the duties have stuck to your daily life so naturally that you have almost forgotten when they became yours. Work, family, care, promises, organising, other people’s worries, tasks that somebody has to do — and that somebody turns out to be you astonishingly often. The very fact that you can bear a lot has gradually convinced those around you, and probably you as well, that you ought to.

9 of Swords carries the load past the end of the day too. The body has gone to bed and the mind works on. You replay conversations, think about what you missed, solve tomorrow’s problems and foresee situations that have not yet arrived. The tension you have gathered no longer has a clear border between work, relationships and personal time. That is exactly when the thought “if I just went away for a while” starts to sound more and more appealing.

8 of Cups brings the first real withdrawal. There is already a part of you that has left, even though physically you are still in the same place. Some relationship, setting or way of living has lost the meaning it once had. You do what is needed, you talk to people, you carry out your tasks, but the sense of belonging gradually diminishes.

5 of Wands brings in the constant battle for attention and energy. Many people want something, many tasks compete over which is the most urgent, and other people’s opinions easily start drowning out your own. You get tired of having to defend every decision, to explain why you have no time or why this once you want to choose yourself.

The Tower ends the Call with a warning that the old regime has reached its limit. If you go on gathering in the same way, change will ask for room in any case. The more sensible option is for you to begin it before life decides to do the renovation without sending you an estimate first.

The five cards gather one clear story: you are tired of living in a state of constant taking on, and you are already ready to admit that you do not want to go on in the same way.

2. What you are looking for

CardsThe Fool · 6 of Swords · 3 of Wands · 9 of Cups · The Star

The Fool carries the longing for the freedom to begin the day without a script. You want to wake up and decide for yourself where you will go, how long you will stay, who you will talk to and whether you feel like talking at all. You are drawn by the idea of landing among people who do not know your old role and have no ready list of expectations of you.

6 of Swords adds the need for distance. When you are too close to your problems, they fill the entire field of vision. Distance gives you a chance to see them at their real size. Part of what looks enormous at home will probably become considerably smaller after a few days without constant contact with it.

3 of Wands opens the horizon. You start thinking about what else is possible for you. Another city, another country, new work, a freer schedule, an independent project, more movement or a life in which travel is regularly present. The wish to be far away already contains curiosity about the future as well.

9 of Cups restores the simple pleasure of having time that is yours. A coffee that is not drunk in a hurry between two tasks. A lunch that is not accompanied by a phone. A walk with no practical purpose. An evening that does not belong to the list of duties. It turns out that luxury does not always have five stars; sometimes it is three hours in which nobody asks you anything.

The Star brings the hope that the next period can be lighter. There is still a wish in you for a future you like. That is what lives beneath the tiredness and makes you look towards the faraway place.

What you are looking for is space, freedom and the chance to feel again that you take part in choosing how your days look.

3. The real reason

CardsThe Devil · 7 of Swords · 4 of Pentacles · 2 of Swords · The Moon

The Devil reveals an attachment to a pattern that is already taking too high a price. You may have grown used to being needed, to seeking approval, to avoiding conflict or to controlling too much of what happens around you. Part of the life that exhausts you goes on existing because you help to feed it.

7 of Swords points to conversations you keep postponing. The thought of leaving may have become easier than the thought of saying: “I do not want this any more.” “I have no wish to take on more.” “These terms no longer suit me.” Distance looks convenient when the words that need to be said at home are difficult.

4 of Pentacles brings in the fear of losing your security. Freedom attracts you, but the familiar life has an income, a home, relationships, order and predictability. Even when a particular structure already weighs on you, it is still familiar. That is why one of your hands reaches for the new while the other still grips the old key.

2 of Swords speaks of a choice that keeps being put off. You are probably trying to keep two possibilities at once: the freedom of the new and the full security of the familiar. In time this hesitation starts to exhaust you more than the decision itself would.

The Moon adds all the fears that the unknown wakes up. What happens if you are wrong? How will people react? Will you cope? Will you lose something important? Some of these questions are sensible, and others grow only because there is not yet an answer.

The real reason is bound up with a freedom you have wanted for a long time while still waiting for someone or something to give you permission. The five cards bring you back to the question: “Am I ready to take responsibility for the life I say I want?”

4. The baggage

Cards5 of Cups · 6 of Cups · King of Swords · 8 of Swords · 10 of Pentacles

5 of Cups carries the old disappointments. There are experiences that still influence your decisions — a relationship, a loss, a missed chance, a hope that fell through or a period you expected to end differently. If those feelings stay unacknowledged, they will travel with you and take part in the way you look at the future.

6 of Cups adds the family story and the old roles. You learned long ago what kind of person you have to be in order to be liked, valued or accepted. If you grew up as the sensible one, the obedient one, the strong one or the one who fixes things, free choice easily brings guilt with it. The old role can be so familiar that you defend it yourself.

King of Swords brings the requirement that everything be logical, provable and safe. You want change, but your mind probably insists on being presented first with a detailed plan and a guaranteed result. A signature from the future would be even better. Your reason is a valuable ally, right up until it starts demanding a certificate from life promising not to surprise you.

8 of Swords gathers the inner limits: “I have no choice”, “I cannot”, “I must”, “I will disappoint people”, “Now is not the right time”. Some of these sentences deserve checking. Many of them may turn out to be rules that nobody demands of you any longer as strongly as you do yourself.

10 of Pentacles carries the real ties to family, home, finances and the system you have built. There are valuable things you want to keep, and people towards whom you have a genuine responsibility. Your task is to find a way of staying connected to them and having a direction of your own at the same time.

Your baggage contains a whole story about who you have been and how you have lived so far. Before you go forward, you will have to decide which part of that story is still yours and which has stayed in the previous chapter.

5. The threshold

CardsDeath · Justice · Ace of Swords · 5 of Pentacles · 4 of Cups

Death brings the end of an old way of taking part in life. Some role, relationship, professional situation, habit or attitude has run its course, and change will ask for room. The longer you try to keep a period that has ended, the more strongly the wish to run away will keep returning.

Justice wants clear terms. If work takes up too much time, you have to set a boundary. If someone has grown used to having you at their disposal, the relationship needs new rules. If a duty has become too heavy, it is necessary to look again at who carries the responsibility.

Ace of Swords brings the conversation and the decision. The words have to be simple and clear: “I am tired.” “I have changed my mind.” “I am ready to live differently.” Once they have been spoken, the situation will find it hard to stay in its old undefined state.

5 of Pentacles reminds you that every serious change has a price. A period of uncertainty is possible, a change in your finances, someone’s disapproval or a temporary sense of having left the familiar before the new has become stable. This part deserves preparation, because freedom feels considerably better when there is also a plan for the bills.

4 of Cups ends the Threshold with the danger of staying in the familiar only because it still functions. Life can go on without bringing you satisfaction. The question is how long you want to use “I can still manage” as an argument for changing nothing.

The Threshold asks one decision of you: “I am ready to change, concretely, the thing that keeps making me dream of escape.”

6. The gift of the road

CardsStrength · Temperance · Queen of Wands · Ace of Pentacles · 3 of Cups

Strength restores your confidence in your own abilities. In an unfamiliar place you will decide alone, find your way, change plans and deal with the small unknowns of the day. Step by step you will remember that you are considerably more capable than your tiredness has allowed you to feel.

Temperance brings a new measure. After a period of overdoing the responsibilities, you will begin to sense more clearly how far you are willing to give, when you need to withdraw and how to distribute your energy so that something is left for you at the end of the day.

Queen of Wands brings back desire. You start having personal plans again, interests, an attraction to people and places, ideas you want to try. After a long period of carrying out other people’s tasks this is an important change: “I am a person with wishes, and not only a person with responsibilities.”

Ace of Pentacles opens a concrete possibility. A new project, work, a course, an income, a home or a practical step towards a more independent life can appear as a result of your decision. Freedom gets a material base and stops being only a pleasant feeling from a trip.

3 of Cups restores the pleasure of people. Once you stop constantly playing the rescuer, relationships can contain laughter, lightness, meetings and the enjoyment of company again. It will become clearer which people want you yourself, and which mostly loved the service called “always available”.

The gift of the road is the return of your personal strength, your desire and your right to a life in which you take part with needs of your own.

7. The return

CardsThe Chariot · The World · 9 of Pentacles · 2 of Pentacles · King of Wands

The Chariot brings a person who comes back with a clearer direction. Once you have felt how different life looks outside the old regime, you will be considerably less inclined to let everything swallow you again. The direction will now want steering from you.

The World closes a period and may leave a real connection with the faraway place. Travel can become a more important part of your life, an idea can appear for work involving other countries, for moving, or simply the decision to leave more often the setting that shuts you into one and the same role.

9 of Pentacles brings independence. You will begin to guard your own time, space and financial freedom more consciously. For one person that will be a separate home, for another a project of their own, for a third a few hours a week that are now untouchable. What they share is the feeling: “I am able to be well in my own company too.”

2 of Pentacles speaks of a new way of managing daily life. The responsibilities will remain, but you will learn to distribute them more sensibly. Some will be delegated, others limited, others concluded for good. The aim is for your life to have more than one centre.

King of Wands ends the story with a direction of your own. You come back with the wish to create, to begin and to make decisions. The old Runaway was waiting for a chance to disappear. The person who has returned already knows what he wants to build.

So the last position gathers the whole road: freedom stops being a place you have to travel to and gradually becomes the way you choose to live.

Ritual and meditation: “The last bus”

For the Runaway I would choose a ritual with both a physical action and a short meditation. Its theme is departure, but the point is to understand what you genuinely want to leave behind before you decide where to go.

Take a real suitcase or travel bag and seven small sheets of paper. On each one write one thing that exhausts you. Write concretely: “I answer everyone immediately”, “I take on the problems of…”, “I stay in this situation out of guilt”, “I work in the evenings”, “I am afraid of disappointing…”. The more concrete the words, the more easily you will see what can actually be changed.

Put the seven sheets in the suitcase and close it. Then sit down, close your eyes and picture the same small station from the image. It is early, the bus is waiting and you have a one-way ticket. In a month you will be able to come back, but for that month nobody will know what they usually expect of you. There is only one condition: the suitcase is small and you can take only what you genuinely want to remain part of your life.

Open your eyes and take the sheets out one by one. With each one write down: “Did I choose this?” “What will happen if I leave it?” “Whose responsibility is this?” “How would I live without it over the next thirty days?”

Then make three groups: “I take with me”, “I return to its owner” and “I leave at the station”. In the first put what genuinely has value and you are ready to carry. In the second let the other people’s problems and the roles you have gradually made your own remain. In the third put what you already want to be finished with.

Tear up the sheets from the third group. For the second, write down what real action will return the responsibility to its place: a conversation, a refusal, delegating, a change in the schedule, ending a habit. Then close the suitcase with the sheets from the first group only.

Now close your eyes again. Picture the bus setting off. The station stays behind you and for the first time in a long while nobody expects anything. Ask yourself: “Who am I when nobody needs me?” Stay with the question for a few minutes and write down the first answer after the meditation.

Then comes the second question: “What do I refuse to take back when I return?”

Choose one concrete boundary and apply it over the next seven days. It can be an evening without work conversations, refusing someone else’s task, one free afternoon, delegating a responsibility or a conversation you have long been putting off. Write it down with the words: “I am ready to guard my freedom through…”

After seven days check what actually happened. How many of the frightening consequences arrived? Who managed without you? Which boundary brought the greatest relief? Where was the guilt stronger than the real problem? Those answers will give you far more than one more fantasy about a one-way ticket.

The resolution

The Runaway’s resolution begins with “I want to get away”. The five cards in each of the seven positions gradually open the whole story: 10 of Wands and 9 of Swords reveal what has gathered, 8 of Cups begins the withdrawal, the Fool and the Star restore the idea of freedom, the Devil and the Moon lead to the patterns and the fears, 5 of Cups and 6 of Cups take you back to the old stories, Death, Justice and Ace of Swords ask for a concrete decision, and the Chariot, 9 of Pentacles and King of Wands lead towards a person who now chooses his own direction. In the end the question “Where can I escape to?” loses its force, and in its place comes a far more interesting one: “Am I ready to create a life I will not constantly want to vanish from?”

Go on in the Game of the SoulIf you chose the Runaway, in the Game of the Soul FatedWays I would go on first with Letting Go, because that is exactly where you can look at what you go on carrying out of habit, guilt or old attachment. After that open The Crossroads, once you are ready to see what real directions are in front of you. If you sense that your mind produces dozens of arguments while your body reacts far more quickly to people, decisions and situations, go on to The Body as well. The Runaway sets off with the dream of being far away one day. The real change begins when he says: “I am ready to make room for my freedom inside the life I am living now.”

3 · The One on the Threshold — You are looking for a new life

For you the faraway place appears at a time when one part of your life has already ended inwardly, even though on the outside much of it carries on to the old timetable. You wake up in the same place, do the familiar tasks, meet the same people, and inside you the sense gradually takes shape that this life has become too narrow for the person you are now. The reason is not always something bad. You have simply grown beyond some of your own choices.

That is why the bridge draws you. One bank is the familiar life with all its securities, memories and settled rules. The other has no exact map yet. There may be a new city there, another country, different work, a new home, love, study, a project of your own or a decision that changes more than one area at once. Between them stands you — far enough from the old to feel that you do not want to stay forever, and still close enough to hear every argument for why it would be sensible to wait a little longer.

This spread follows what has already ended, what kind of life draws you, what you will try to take from the past, which decision unlocks the transition and what person you will be once the new stops being a dream and gets an address, a budget and a key to the front door.

1. The call

CardsJudgement · Wheel of Fortune · 2 of Wands · 8 of Cups · Ace of Wands

Judgement begins the story with a reckoning you can hardly postpone any longer. You look back over the years and begin to tell apart what was right for the person you were then and what no longer has the same place in your life. Some decisions have served their purpose. Others have stayed on out of habit. A third group has probably been waiting to be changed for a long time.

Wheel of Fortune brings movement from the outside as well. Circumstances can change faster than you expected. An offer appears, a meeting, an opportunity, information about another place, a change at work or a situation that seems to open a door exactly when you have already started thinking about it. Life begins to offer you options and you can no longer pretend so easily that there is no choice.

2 of Wands puts the world in front of you. You begin to compare. What would my life look like elsewhere? What would I do if I changed direction? What does it cost? What do I have to learn? Who would I take with me? What will I leave behind? The dream already has its first outlines, and at some point you will probably find yourself with twelve tabs open in the browser and the feeling that this is evidently serious now.

8 of Cups brings the inner withdrawal. Part of you has already left the old period. You may go on meeting your commitments, but the emotional bond with some job, relationship, setting or way of living gradually weakens. This is an important moment, because a person rarely undertakes a large transition the second they first think of it. First they leave inwardly.

Ace of Wands ends the Call with new energy. After a long period of thinking, a real wish to begin appears. The idea now comes without fear; it starts to excite you. You picture the new and you feel life in it.

The five cards gather one clear message: “I have reached the end of a period and I am ready to see what can begin after it.”

2. What you are looking for

CardsThe World · The Chariot · The Sun · 3 of Wands · 10 of Cups

The World carries the wish to close the old cycle and widen your life. It is no longer enough for you simply to change one detail while everything else carries on as before. You want the sense of a next chapter. For one person that will genuinely be another country or city, for another a new professional path, and for a third the change will touch home, relationships and personal direction all at once.

The Chariot adds movement and independence. You want to be the person who chooses where they are going. After a period of hesitation you start to miss the sense that you are the one steering. The new life in your imagination has more will of its own and fewer decisions taken because of other people’s expectations.

The Sun carries the wish for vitality. You want to enjoy the day again, to have energy, curiosity and the sense that the future holds something worth looking forward to. This card matters a great deal, because it reminds you that a new life is more than an improvement project. You also have to like it.

3 of Wands opens the view wider still. You start thinking about what can happen after the first change. If you move, what follows? If you change work, what other possibilities open? If you end an old relationship, what kind of relationship would you want from here on? You are already looking beyond the threshold itself.

10 of Cups adds a very important detail: you are looking for a life with belonging in it. The new has no meaning for you if it is only freedom without closeness. You want a place, people and a daily life in which you feel at home. That can be a family, a partnership, a new circle of people or a home you genuinely feel is yours.

What you are looking for is a wider life in which you are free to choose and at the same time have something to belong to.

3. The real reason

CardsDeath · The Hanged Man · 4 of Cups · 7 of Pentacles · The High Priestess

Death brings the ending itself. One of your identities has already finished. You may have been the person who wanted a particular career, a particular kind of relationship, a particular home or exactly this way of living. In one period that was true for you. Now you are a different person.

The Hanged Man speaks of a long pause between the ending and the beginning. You probably knew that change was needed, but you stayed in waiting because you could not yet see the next direction clearly enough. Life went on and part of you waited. That waiting has already done its work: it helped you look at the situation from different angles.

4 of Cups carries the tiredness of repetition. Even the pleasant parts of daily life may have lost their taste, because they no longer lead anywhere. In time a person begins to sense that one more identical month will not answer a question that requires a different decision.

7 of Pentacles makes you look at how much you have put into your present life. Years, money, work, feelings, effort. That is exactly what makes the transition hard. It is easy to say “I do not want it any more”; it is much harder to accept that you invested seriously in something you no longer want to continue in the same way. What you invested, though, stays with you. It is part of the experience you carry into the next thing.

The High Priestess ends the position with a quiet knowing. Before you made the lists, the plans and the comparisons, you probably already sensed which way your decision was leaning. Your intuition spoke first, and reason was then given the task of catching up.

The real reason is simple: “I have changed enough to be unable to go on living fully by the decisions of my earlier version.”

4. The baggage

Cards6 of Cups · 10 of Wands · 4 of Pentacles · 5 of Swords · 9 of Swords

6 of Cups carries the memories, the people and the emotional ties to the past. There will be parts of the old life you sincerely love. A place, family, friends, habits, a neighbourhood, a history. When the change becomes real, exactly those ties can start to look even more precious. Memory is a talented film editor and loves to assemble the most beautiful scenes just before a big departure.

10 of Wands adds the responsibilities you have gathered. You may ask yourself who will look after certain things, who will take on tasks and whether you have the right to change direction when so many people rely on you. Some of those commitments will continue, but their form will probably have to change.

4 of Pentacles carries the fear of releasing what is safe. The home, the income, the status, the possessions you have gathered or simply the familiar rhythm give a sense of stability. That is precisely why the old bank can be so hard to leave. You know where the shop is, the doctor, the keys and every administrative absurdity. The new life has not yet proved that it knows where its documents are.

5 of Swords carries the old conflicts and the need to prove something. Part of your decisions may still be bound up with people in front of whom you want to be understood, recognised or justified. If you set off wanting to prove that you were right, you will carry the old argument with you far longer than it deserves.

9 of Swords gathers the worries about the future. Will I manage? Will I regret it? Will the money be enough? Will I find people? Will I feel alone? These questions are a natural part of a large change, but they must not be given the right to make the decision instead of you.

Your baggage contains love for the past, real responsibilities, fear of loss and anxiety before the unknown. The task is to decide what is worth crossing the bridge with you and what has to stay on the other side of it.

5. The threshold

CardsThe Tower · The Fool · Ace of Swords · 2 of Swords · 6 of Swords

The Tower brings a moment when the old explanation no longer holds. Some fact, conversation, event or realisation of your own can break the long hesitation. You will no longer be able to tell yourself convincingly that everything is fine and you simply need a little rest. The truth will ask for action.

The Fool comes straight after it with the first step. He has no ready five-year plan. He has enough trust to begin. That matters, because in a large transition nobody is given a guarantee for every turn ahead. If you wait for all the unknowns to disappear, the bridge may turn into a permanent address.

Ace of Swords brings a clear decision and concrete words. A conversation, an application, a contract, a ticket, a candidacy, a termination, a proposal — something has to take form. After this card the thought “I want change” has to be translated into the language of real life.

2 of Swords is the last hesitation before the step. You may try once more to keep both banks. To begin the new without releasing the old. To have the full freedom of change and all the security of the previous life. This card is exactly the one that asks you to choose.

6 of Swords ends the Threshold with movement. The decision is already being carried out. The bags are packed, the documents are ready, the conversation has been had or the first real step has already been taken. From this moment the question gradually changes from “whether” to “how”.

The Threshold says: “I am ready to take the first real step, even while I do not yet know every detail of the road.”

6. The gift of the road

CardsThe Magician · Strength · Queen of Pentacles · 8 of Pentacles · 3 of Pentacles

The Magician restores the feeling of authorship. After the first steps you will discover how much more you can create alone than you supposed. You will solve problems, find information, arrange new conditions and use skills the old life had left in the background.

Strength adds trust in your own resilience. There will be hard days, but every obstacle you get past will reduce the fear of the unknown. Step by step you will stop asking whether you are capable and start asking how you want to use that capability.

Queen of Pentacles brings in the home and practical security. The new life will have to become comfortable to live in. Home, means, food, rhythm, care for the body and daily organisation will all be part of the building. This card is wonderful for someone who has dreamed of change, because it turns the dream into surroundings in which you can genuinely wake up on an ordinary Wednesday and feel good.

8 of Pentacles brings the learning and the persistence. You will probably have to master a new skill, a language, a professional system or a way of working. A new life is built through small repeated actions. The bridge itself may be beautiful, but on the other side somebody still has to assemble the furniture.

3 of Pentacles adds the people with whom you will create the next period. Colleagues, friends, a partner, professional contacts or a new community will matter. You will discover that change also gets by without your doing everything alone. Part of maturity is knowing how to ask for help, to work with others and to let other people into your new story.

The gift of the road is the realisation that you are able to build your life step by step, and that the new becomes stable through the actions you repeat after the first brave choice.

7. The return

CardsThe Emperor · 9 of Pentacles · King of Cups · 4 of Wands · 10 of Pentacles

The Emperor brings a new inner structure. After the transition you will have much clearer rules for yourself. You will know what you accept, what you want to keep and which compromises are now outside your way of living. Your decisions will start coming from a steadier place.

9 of Pentacles adds independence. You will value your own space more, your time, your financial independence and the ability to be well with yourself. This can lead to a real home of your own, work, a project or a way of living that gives you more freedom.

King of Cups brings emotional maturity. After the great change you will look at relationships differently too. You will have more clarity about who you want close to you, what you are ready to give and what you need in return. The new life will only make sense if the old emotional patterns stay behind you.

4 of Wands brings the sense of arrival. Some moment will make you say: “Yes, I am in the place I chose myself.” It can be a new home, a celebration, the first guests, a new community or the day when the unfamiliar starts to look like your life.

10 of Pentacles ends with a prospect of permanence. What you have created has a chance to stay. The new period can bring stability, a foundation of your own, a family setting or a long-term direction that reaches beyond the first impulse to change something.

The person who stood on the bridge with the question “Will I manage?” reaches the other bank with the thought: “I am able to build a place for the life I chose.”

Ritual and practice: “Crossing the bridge”

For the One on the Threshold I would choose a ritual with a real crossing, because his whole story is about the difference between the inner decision and the first action.

Take two sheets of paper. On the first write “The life I am concluding”, and on the second “The life I am beginning”. On the first, write down seven things you no longer want to continue in the same way. They can be to do with work, home, relationships, habits, fears, the way you use your time or an old role of yours.

On the second sheet write seven concrete things you want to be present in your next life. Avoid general words like “happiness” and “success”. Write what they look like in daily life. If you want freedom, how much time is yours? If you want a different home, what is it like? If you want love, what does the relationship look like? If you want new work, how does an ordinary working day go?

Then find a place that physically has a threshold: a bridge, a door, an archway, a path between two spaces or even the entrance to your home. Take both sheets with you.

Before you step across, read the first one and say to yourself: “I am grateful for what this period gave me, and I am ready to conclude what has already played its part.” Then put the sheet away in your bag. There is no need to tear it up straight away. With this archetype the past remains a friend. It is the bank you set out from.

Step across the threshold and read the second sheet. Then say to yourself: “I am ready to build this life through the decisions I make from today.”

After the ritual choose one single action you will carry out within 72 hours. It has to exist in reality: a CV sent, a phone call, a conversation, signing up for a course, viewing a particular property, working out a budget, submitting a document, buying a ticket or another action connected with your change.

This matters, because the One on the Threshold can easily fall in love with the idea of the new life and spend another six months on beautiful visualisations of the bridge. The Fool is probably already glancing nervously at his watch.

Meditation: “The morning after the decision”

Do it in the evening before sleep. Close your eyes and imagine that a year has already passed since the great change. You wake up on an ordinary day. There is no special celebration and nobody is filming a motivational video about your life.

Look around the room. What is the home like? What light comes in? What is around the bed? Who lives with you? How does the day begin? Where do you go? What do you do? What people do you meet? What do you allow yourself to refuse? What do you have more time for? What do you miss from the old life and what has not even crossed your mind?

After the meditation write: “I am one year past the decision and the greatest change is…” Finish the sentence without long thought.

After it write three more: “I have kept…”, “I have left behind…”, “I have created…”

Those three sentences will give you a much clearer picture of what the new life actually means for you.

The resolution

The resolution of the One on the Threshold begins with the sense that a period is no longer his. Judgement and the Wheel of Fortune wake the movement, the World and the Chariot open the next horizon, Death and the Hanged Man acknowledge the inner ending, 6 of Cups and 4 of Pentacles bring back the attachments, the Tower and Ace of Swords reach the decision, the Magician and 8 of Pentacles begin the building, and the Emperor, 4 of Wands and 10 of Pentacles lead towards a life that already has a foundation. At the start you say: “I want to begin again.” In the end the question becomes more mature: “Am I ready to turn the new beginning into a life I can build every day?”

Go on in the Game of the SoulIf you chose the One on the Threshold, I would make your first next door in the Game of the Soul FatedWays The Crossroads, because there is already more than one possible direction and the choice wants to take form. If you sense that the past goes on tying you to the old bank, go on through Letting Go. And if the change touches home, country or place, open The Celestial Teacher as well, to look at the period through the larger picture. The One on the Threshold has already heard the call. His next task is to say: “I am ready to take the first step and see what life I will build on the other side.”

4 · The Sign Hunter — You are looking for an answer

For you the journey can begin long before you have chosen a date. First comes the name of a place that stays in your memory. Then you meet it again in a conversation, a photograph, a book or a dream. In time a symbol appears, a number, a song or a person who mentions the same subject entirely by chance, and you begin to wonder why your attention keeps returning there. After the third coincidence the curiosity grows; after the fifth you are probably ready to ask the universe for a reference number.

For the Sign Hunter the faraway place is a trail leading to a question that already lives in you. The pull may genuinely lead to a journey, a move, a meeting or an important change in your life, but the essence is different: why exactly this symbol touches you, what wish wakes up every time you see it, and which decision has long been looking for a way to be named. The thirty-five cards follow the whole road — from the first quiet sense to the moment when you are ready to decide what you will do with the trail you have been given.

1. The call

CardsThe High Priestess · The Moon · Page of Cups · The Star · Judgement

The High Priestess opens the story with a feeling that has no clear wording yet. A particular place, face, symbol or word draws your attention in an unusual way. You cannot explain why straight away, but the image stays. Intuition has already caught something that reason will only now try to translate.

The Moon adds the dreams, the associations and the emotional sensitivity. In this period your awareness is more receptive to symbols, because there is an unresolved question in you. You may dream of a place, feel a strange familiarity with an image you have never seen in real life, or connect a particular song, animal, number or word with a strong feeling. The Moon reminds you that a symbol passes through your own emotional history, and that is why its meaning will always be personal.

Page of Cups brings the surprising coincidence. Something small can open a large question — a message, a conversation with a stranger, a photograph you come across, a book that falls open at the right page, or a word you hear exactly when you are thinking about a particular decision. The Page comes without a final answer. He hands over an envelope and leaves it to you to decide whether you will open it.

The Star connects the sign with hope. What you notice probably touches something you strongly want to move closer to. A new life, love, freedom, meaning, travel, creative work, a home or a possibility you considered far away. That is why one image can take on enormous force: it begins to stand for a future you would like to be possible.

Judgement ends the Call with the sense that the question now goes beyond curious coincidences. The time for a reckoning has come. What are you trying to change? What life is no longer enough for you? Which decision keeps returning again and again? The sign has simply opened the door to a question that has long been waiting.

The five cards gather a first message: “I am ready to pay attention to what repeats, because behind it there is a question I no longer want to postpone.”

2. What you are looking for

CardsThe Magician · 2 of Wands · Ace of Swords · 7 of Cups · The Hermit

The Magician carries the wish to find out whether the trail can be turned into reality. If you keep meeting a particular place, you begin to think about whether you could actually go there. If the symbol is connected with a profession, a person or an idea, you want to know whether there is a real road towards them. The Magician turns curiosity into a question: “What can I do with this?”

2 of Wands points to a choice between two possibilities. Part of you looks towards the familiar life, another is already exploring the next horizon. You may be comparing two countries, two professional decisions, two relationships or two versions of the future. The sign draws your attention precisely because it appears on the border between them.

Ace of Swords looks for clarity. You want a moment when the confusion ends and you can say: “I have understood what this means for me.” This card also brings in the facts. The pull towards a place now has to meet the real information about it. Interest in a person has to be checked against their behaviour. The wish for change needs concrete possibilities. Real clarity stays clear even when the light in the room is on.

7 of Cups carries the many possible interpretations. One symbol can easily turn into ten different stories depending on what you would like it to mean. If you see 11:11, you can invent a whole novel by dinner time. The card asks you to tell desire apart from information, and fantasy from real possibility.

The Hermit closes the position with the need to be alone with your own question. After all the symbols, interpretations and other people’s opinions there has to be a moment when you ask: “What do I think about this?” The answer you are looking for is probably closer than you suppose.

You are looking for a clear decision that combines intuition, possibility and your own personal truth.

3. The real reason

CardsThe Lovers · 4 of Cups · 8 of Cups · The Devil · 6 of Cups

The Lovers place the choice at the very centre of the story. Two directions compete for your heart. It may be love, but also work, a country, a way of living, a decision about moving or a choice between security and desire. The signs have grown brighter because the inner decision has ripened enough to look for attention.

4 of Cups carries dissatisfaction with the present situation. Something no longer fills you the way it used to. The possibilities around you may be sensible, convenient and well known, but the sense of living interest is missing from them. That is why your eyes look elsewhere.

8 of Cups adds the readiness to move away. Part of you is already saying goodbye to the old. There is a relationship, a habit, a setting or a way of living that is gradually losing its emotional force. The sign can turn into an image of the direction you want to set off in after that ending.

The Devil complicates the story with attachment. You may want the change strongly and at the same time be bound to a fear, a dependence, a person or a habit that holds you back. You may be looking for a sign because you hope an outer force will give you permission for a choice you find hard to allow yourself.

6 of Cups brings back an old story. Some theme may be connected with a childhood dream, a place you loved years ago, a person from the past or an experience you have never forgotten. The symbol touches exactly that memory, and that is why your reaction is so strong.

The real reason behind the trails is a choice between what you are attached to and the life you now feel a new desire for. If every symbol disappeared tomorrow, the question would remain.

4. The baggage

Cards9 of Swords · 2 of Swords · 7 of Swords · 4 of Pentacles · 5 of Cups

9 of Swords carries the anxiety that can colour every coincidence. When you strongly fear a particular outcome, the brain becomes extremely talented at finding evidence. The song turns into a warning, a chance name into confirmation, and the weather forecast almost acquires a personal position on the matter.

2 of Swords carries the postponed decision. When you do not yet want to choose, every sign can be given the job of deciding for you. And so attention gradually shifts from the question “What do I want?” to “What will I be told to do?”

7 of Swords brings in the selective reading. You may unconsciously notice the coincidences that support the preferred version, while the rest pass by without any special status. If you want a particular person to come back, everything connected with them easily becomes a sign. If you have already decided to leave, every photograph of the country you want looks like a personally addressed invitation.

4 of Pentacles adds the attachment to a particular outcome. You want the sign to mean exactly what you are hoping for. The more firmly you insist on one ending, the harder it becomes to observe freely what is actually happening.

5 of Cups carries the old disappointments. After pain or loss, new symbols are easily refracted through the past. Someone who was once abandoned may look for warnings of the next abandonment. Someone who missed an opportunity may see every repetition as a chance to put the old story right.

The Sign Hunter’s baggage is made of fear, expectation, old pain and the wish for a particular answer. The better you know that baggage, the more freely you can look at the trails.

5. The threshold

CardsDeath · The Tower · Wheel of Fortune · The Hanged Man · 6 of Swords

Death opens the Threshold with an ending that is already ripening. Some old situation has served its purpose, and the repetitions around you can grow stronger precisely in the period when you are ready to leave it. The sign takes on force because it stands for movement towards what comes next.

The Tower brings sudden clarity. An event, a conversation, a meeting or a piece of information can sharply change the way you understand the whole story. Something you long read as mystical may suddenly get an entirely ordinary explanation. Or the other way round — a coincidence you did not expect may open a possibility that until now existed only in your imagination.

Wheel of Fortune brings a change in the circumstances. A chance appears for travel, an offer, a free place, a meeting, an invitation, information or a situation that moves the choice forward. There is now something to do with what was previously only a symbol.

The Hanged Man asks for a pause before the reaction. Every possibility deserves a moment in which you look at the new situation from different sides and understand whether it genuinely matches what you want.

6 of Swords ends the Threshold with movement. After the observing, the surprise and the reassessment comes the decision to leave one point and move towards the next. It can be a real journey, an emotional withdrawal or a concrete change in your life.

The Threshold says: “I am ready to turn the trail into a choice and the choice into movement.”

6. The gift of the road

CardsThe Sun · Temperance · Ace of Cups · Queen of Cups · Page of Wands

The Sun brings clarity after the long deciphering. Something that looked complicated begins to be seen more simply. The real meeting with the place, the person or the possibility will remove a large part of the fantasies and the fears. You will know more, because you will have lived part of the story.

Temperance combines intuition with reason. After the journey you will have a more mature relationship with signs. You will be able to notice them, to take an interest in them and at the same time to check the feeling against the facts and against your own values.

Ace of Cups brings a new feeling. The journey can open an emotional door — love, inspiration, joy, a wish to create or the sense of having arrived somewhere that touches a very personal part of you. That experience can give your life a new direction.

Queen of Cups deepens the trust in your intuition. Once you have compared the symbol with reality, you will begin to tell the quiet inner sense apart from anxious fantasy more easily. That is a very valuable gift for the Sign Hunter.

Page of Wands completes the position with fresh curiosity and a next step. After the answer comes the wish to explore further. A new place, a course, a project, a person or an idea can open the next chapter.

The gift of the road is a more mature trust in yourself — the ability to sense, to check and then to act.

7. The return

CardsThe World · Justice · King of Swords · 3 of Wands · 10 of Pentacles

The World closes the long period of searching. After the journey, or after the decision, you will have the sense that a mystery has served its purpose. You may understand why the place drew you, why a particular theme kept returning or what you were looking for through all the coincidences.

Justice returns the responsibility to your own hands. The trails can point your attention, but life demands a decision. If you choose to move, you have to take real steps. If the question is about love, you have to see what actually exists between two people. If it concerns work, the possibility has to be weighed by its terms and its consequences.

King of Swords brings sober judgement. You can now tell fact, hope, fear and intuition apart far more clearly. That frees you from the need to look for new confirmation every day. At a certain point enough information has been gathered and reason has to do its part.

3 of Wands turns your attention to the future. You are no longer busy only with the question of what the last sign meant. You begin to think about what you will do from here on. The next direction becomes more interesting than the earlier mystery.

10 of Pentacles gives the discovery the chance to become part of your long-term life. The place can turn into a home, the meeting into a lasting bond, the idea into a professional direction, or the realisation into a decision that changes how you live for years ahead.

The Sign Hunter who has returned can now say: “I have seen the trails, I have understood what they wake in me, and I am ready to choose for myself what comes next.”

Practice: “The file on one sign”

For the Sign Hunter I would choose a seven-day observation, because his answer needs time. Take a separate notebook or seven sheets of paper, and over the next seven days write down only the coincidences that genuinely draw your attention. They can be numbers, names, places, songs, animals, repeated words, dreams or meetings.

With each event write down four things: what I saw, what I was thinking about immediately before it, what I felt straight away and what I would like it to mean. The last question matters a great deal, because desire is often the biggest clue to the reason a sign has become so significant.

Add a fifth question as well: “If this coincidence has no predictive meaning at all, what does my reaction to it still tell me about myself?” That answer may turn out to be the most valuable one.

On the seventh day read everything from the beginning and look for the repeating theme rather than the repeating symbol. The different signs may all be connected with one and the same wish: home, love, freedom, travel, new work, an ending, a return to a particular person, creative work or change.

Then finish three sentences: “I have noticed that I most often think about…”, “I am most excited when the sign reminds me of…” and “I am most afraid of the possibility that…”

The three answers will outline the real question far better than the symbol itself.

Meditation: “If the signs fall silent”

Sit with your eyes closed and imagine that from tomorrow you will never again come across the same number, symbol, name or place by chance. No dreams, no songs at the exact second, no clocks mysteriously waiting for you to look at them at 11:11. The universe has taken a week off.

Then ask yourself: “If nobody out there gives me any more confirmation, what do I want?”

Do not hurry to answer. First picture one possibility. How does your body feel? Then the other. Which one brings expansion, interest and the wish to move forward? Which one contracts you? Which one calms you only because it is familiar?

After the meditation finish the sentence: “I am ready to choose…”

If you are not ready to choose yet, write: “In order to be ready, I need to find out…” and name what real information is missing. That way the next task is already clear.

Then take one verifiable step. If the theme is a place — research the journey. If it is a person — look at their real behaviour or have the conversation. If it is work — check the possibilities. If it is a home — look at particular areas and costs. If it is creative work — start a small project. The trail now has to meet reality.

You can end the practice with the words: “I am open to meaningful coincidences, I pay attention to what they wake in me, and I am ready to carry the responsibility for my decisions myself.”

The resolution

The Sign Hunter’s resolution begins with the question “What is the universe trying to tell me?” The High Priestess and the Moon open the sensitivity to symbols, Page of Cups and the Star bring the coincidences and the hope, the Magician and Ace of Swords look for how the trail can be translated into reality, the Lovers reach the hidden choice, 9 of Swords and 7 of Swords separate the fear and the expectation from the event itself, Death and the Wheel of Fortune open the change, the Sun and Temperance bring clarity, and Justice and King of Swords return the decision to you. The final question is already a different one: “What am I ready to do with what I have understood about myself?” And this is the moment when the Hunter stops waiting for the cosmos to send him one more registered letter.

Go on in the Game of the SoulIf you chose the Sign Hunter, the natural continuation in the Game of the Soul FatedWays is Signs — the place where you can bring the symbol, the coincidence or the repetition that will not leave your thoughts. If you sense a choice between two directions behind it, pass through The Crossroads as well. And if the question is connected with an older pattern that seems to meet you again in a different form, Karma can open one more layer of the story. The Sign Hunter begins with his eyes turned towards the world, and the real answer comes when he can say: “I have understood why this trail touches me, and I am ready to decide where I will go from it.”

5 · The Keeper of Silence — You are looking for yourself

For you the faraway place draws you with its quiet. You picture a small room with a window facing the mountain, tea, a book, a long walk, a lake, an evening with no plan and a few hours in which the phone stays away from the rhythm of the day. The picture itself brings relief, because over the last period far too many things have wanted a part of your attention. People, conversations, work, information, decisions, other people’s moods, notifications, tasks. A large part of that life may well be precious to you, and even so your own space has gradually shrunk to a size in which you barely fit yourself.

The Keeper of Silence appears when a person knows who around them is tired, who has a problem, who is waiting for an answer and what has to be finished by Friday, while the question “How am I?” takes them a few minutes longer. Distance then starts to look like a place where for a while nobody will tug at your sleeve.

The thirty-five cards follow why you have arrived at this need, what you will hear when the outer voices grow quieter, which part of yourself you have been leaving until last, what habit you will have to change and what your life will look like once your own needs have a place in it again.

1. The call

CardsThe Hermit · 4 of Swords · 10 of Wands · 9 of Swords · 8 of Cups

The Hermit begins the story with a need for distance. You want time in which to stay alone with your own thoughts and have nobody add an opinion to them. Over the last months you have probably taken part in far too many other people’s stories. You have helped, listened, organised, decided and been the one others turn to. That has value, but the question gradually arises of when you last heard yourself without an audience.

4 of Swords carries the tiredness of constant activity. Body and mind want a pause. It is already about more than one free evening. You need a period in which what has gathered can settle and the nervous system can stop waiting for the next notification. Even wonderful people can become a great many when there are twenty-seven of them before lunch.

10 of Wands reveals how many responsibilities you have collected. Some you chose, others arrived with you gradually because you cope. The more reliable you have been, the easier it became for everyone to assume you could bear a little more. In time that “little more” acquires a postcode of its own.

9 of Swords carries the load into the hours meant for rest. The mind goes on working, replays conversations, draws up plans and rehearses tomorrow’s situations. There may be a feeling that even when nobody actually wants anything from you, inwardly you are still on call.

8 of Cups brings in the wish to move away from that rhythm. Part of you is already looking for another space. A few days alone, a distant journey, a mountain, a small town, a house in nature, or simply a place where life moves more slowly. That pull is a signal that the present rhythm has started to cost too much.

The five cards gather a very clear call: “I am ready to step back far enough to hear what is going on inside me.”

2. What you are looking for

CardsThe High Priestess · The Star · Temperance · 9 of Cups · 4 of Cups

The High Priestess carries the need for inner clarity. You want to tell apart again which wish is yours and which appeared because somebody else has a plan for you. When you have long been surrounded by many opinions, your own intuition can start speaking more quietly. It has stayed with you. It has simply been waiting for everyone else to finish.

The Star restores the sense of direction and hope. Beneath the tiredness there is a part of you that still knows life can be lighter, more meaningful and closer to your own nature. You are looking for a place in which to remember your wishes without the immediate question of how practical they are.

Temperance carries the need for measure. You want to find a rhythm in which work, people, care for others and time for yourself can exist without a constant battle over who gets the last free hour. After a period of overdoing it you dream of a life in which your energy lasts until the evening.

9 of Cups adds the pleasure. You want to remember what you like. What food do you choose when nobody sets the menu? Where would you go alone? What would you do for a whole afternoon if usefulness had no vote? Which small pleasures have you abandoned because there is always something “more important”?

4 of Cups also reveals the emotional over-fullness you have gathered. You have enough information, enough conversations, enough tasks. More of the same will not solve the problem now. It is time for your attention to turn towards what is missing.

What you are looking for far away is a space in which to feel again what you want, what brings you joy and what rhythm genuinely belongs to you.

3. The real reason

CardsThe Moon · 2 of Swords · Queen of Cups · 6 of Cups · Ace of Cups

The Moon opens a layer of feelings that have long been left for later. Tiredness, irritation, loneliness, longing, dissatisfaction, fear or sadness can be present without an easy explanation. When the day is full, a person has an impressive ability to postpone their own feelings. There is always one more email, one more conversation and one more reason to schedule the philosophical questions for next week.

2 of Swords carries the inner division. Part of you knows a change is needed, and another is afraid of what will happen if you start putting yourself further forward. You may wonder whether people will understand, whether someone will feel overlooked or whether you have the right to want more space of your own. The hesitation itself already spends energy.

Queen of Cups restores your own emotional sensitivity. You are probably very good at reading others. You sense the mood in the room, you know who needs attention and you notice the change in a close person’s voice. That talent is valuable. The next task is for the same sensitivity to start turning towards you as well.

6 of Cups leads to an earlier version of your life. You may remember an activity you loved, a place where you genuinely felt well, a person you were before the responsibilities became so many. You may realise that you left a part of yourself behind through a thousand small postponements.

Ace of Cups opens a new emotional page. Once your own feelings have a place, the ability to feel joy, desire, closeness, inspiration and curiosity will start coming back. That is far more than rest. That is the return of an inner life.

The real reason for your wish to move away is simple: “I am ready to understand again what I feel and what I want, before deciding what I have to do.”

4. The baggage

CardsThe Devil · 5 of Wands · 7 of Wands · 4 of Pentacles · 10 of Swords

The Devil carries the habit of being constantly connected. The phone, the work, other people’s problems, social media, the need to know what is happening and the sense that you have to react quickly will travel with you easily. You can climb a mountain, sit down facing a magnificent view and five minutes later be checking whether somebody has written “Urgent!” in the group chat. Technological progress has spiritual trials of its own.

5 of Wands carries the constant outer noise. Opinions, arguments, competing needs, small tensions and the sense that you always have to take part in somebody’s discussion. A long stay in such surroundings can make silence feel almost unfamiliar.

7 of Wands adds the role of the person who is forever defending their boundaries, because others have grown used to them being open. You may feel obliged to explain why you want time alone, why you will not answer straight away or why this commitment no longer suits you.

4 of Pentacles reveals the attachment to control. If you are the one who organises, keeps track and decides, stepping back can wake anxiety. What happens if others take on the tasks in a different way? What if something is left imperfect? The great discovery may be that the world goes on turning even when somebody else has chosen the restaurant.

10 of Swords carries the end of a period of depletion. Something in the old regime has reached a natural end. Your body, your attention and your emotional resource will not want to go on paying the same price forever. It is time for part of that load to be concluded.

The Keeper of Silence’s baggage is the constant availability, the need to take part in everything, the defence of one’s own space and the fear of leaving control in other hands.

5. The threshold

CardsDeath · The Hanged Man · 6 of Swords · 8 of Swords · 5 of Cups

Death brings the end of the old role. The person who is always available, always takes things on and always copes can no longer be your only version. The next period requires new rules for your time, your energy and your attention.

The Hanged Man asks for a pause. For a long time you have solved difficulties through more effort. When something was not working, you probably added more work, more organising and a little more of yourself. Now the solution comes through stopping. You have to leave enough empty space to see which tasks genuinely deserve to come back into it.

6 of Swords brings a move away from surroundings or a habit that exhausts you. It can be a journey, a short period of solitude, a change in your working rhythm or a conscious reduction of communication. Physical distance will help you see your life from another perspective.

8 of Swords reveals the limits you yourself go on accepting as obligatory. “I have to answer.” “I am obliged to help.” “They will be offended.” “I have no right to refuse.” Some of those rules deserve a serious review. How many of them are real and how many are left over from an older version of you?

5 of Cups adds the guilt that can appear once you start changing your relationships. Somebody will probably notice that they no longer have the same access to your time. Another may be disappointed. It means the system is changing, and your decision stays right.

The Threshold says: “I am ready to change the way I give my time and my energy, even when others have to get used to my new boundaries.”

6. The gift of the road

CardsStrength · The Empress · The Sun · 9 of Pentacles · Ace of Pentacles

Strength restores the inner steadiness. After a period of quiet you begin to feel that you can be good to people without being constantly at their disposal. You can refuse without writing a dissertation in defence of your decision. You can be close to someone and have a space of your own at the same time.

The Empress restores pleasure, beauty and the connection with the body. You start noticing again what feels good — tasty food, nature, a beautiful home, movement, creative work, music, a book, sun, touch, sleep. After a period oriented mainly towards tasks, this can feel like the waking of a whole forgotten part of you.

The Sun brings vitality. The energy gradually returns, and with it the wish for people, journeys, ideas and experiences. The difference matters: you now choose them out of interest, instead of accepting them as one more item on the programme.

9 of Pentacles gives pleasure in your own company. You will start to value the hours in which you are alone, without seeing them as empty space that has to be filled at once. Your own time turns into a resource you guard.

Ace of Pentacles turns that new attitude into a real change. You may create a space of your own for work, a new routine, a regular practice, an activity, a more sensible schedule or a concrete change at home and in daily life that supports your new rhythm.

The gift of the road is a return to a life in which the body, pleasure, personal space and your own wishes have just as real a place as the duties.

7. The return

CardsThe World · The Magician · King of Pentacles · 3 of Cups · 4 of Wands

The World brings the completion of the cycle in which you defined yourself mainly through what you do for everyone else. You come back with a fuller sense of yourself. The work, those close to you, the caring and the responsibilities stay important, but they no longer exhaust your identity.

The Magician restores active choice. After the silence you will have more clarity about what you want to change and enough will to do it. You may reorganise your schedule, change the way you work, bring back an old activity or begin something that has waited a long time.

King of Pentacles brings durability. The new rhythm has to work in real life too. Time for yourself has to have a place in the calendar, rest has to be part of the routine, and care for the body has to be given the same seriousness as the other commitments. That way the change will be independent of whether an hour happens to be free.

3 of Cups brings people back in a different way. Once you have restored your personal space, company can bring pleasure again. You will tell apart more clearly the meetings that give you energy from the relationships after which you need two days and a charger.

4 of Wands ends with a new sense of home. The place you live in starts to contain more of you. You may create a small corner of your own, a new family rhythm, a personal ritual for rest, or rules that guard a particular part of your time.

The return brings a very simple change with a large effect: “I am part of my own life, and I will no longer leave myself for whatever time happens to remain.”

Practice: “The quiet hour”

For the Keeper of Silence I would choose a practice that can easily continue after the journey. Once a week set aside one hour with no phone, television, music, news, social media, book, work or conversation. The only things allowed are a notebook, a pen, water or tea, and a place where you can be alone.

For the first ten minutes simply stay without a task. If you reach for the phone, write down what you wanted to check. If it occurs to you that right now you have to do something extremely important, write that down too. It is very likely that the silence will reveal how quickly the mind tries to find work when nobody has given it any.

After the tenth minute, finish this sentence seven times: “When nobody wants anything from me, I am…” Write the first word or sentence that comes. Do not edit the answers.

Then write: “I am tired of…”, “I am hungry for…”, “I am most myself when…”, “I am ready to give less time to…” and “I am ready to give more time to…”

Read what you have written only at the end of the hour. Choose just one sentence that surprised you. It will be the theme for the coming week.

Ritual: “The cup that is only mine”

For this archetype I would add a very small daily ritual as well. Choose a favourite cup that you will use only when you set time aside for yourself. Once a day make tea, coffee or another drink and sit with it for fifteen minutes without your phone.

Before the first sip say to yourself: “I am an important part of my own day.”

During those fifteen minutes ask yourself one question: “What do I need today?” The answer may be sleep, a conversation, a walk, movement, solitude, food, love, help, entertainment or refusing something. Then choose one small step with which you will honour that need.

This ritual is deliberately simple. The Keeper of Silence needs rest rather than one more complicated task to be carried out perfectly. Otherwise a week later there will be a spreadsheet for the meditation, a colour-coded calendar for the cup and a fresh reason to feel overloaded.

Meditation: “The house with no other voices”

Close your eyes and imagine a house in nature. It is yours, and for one day nobody will come to it. You go inside, leave the phone by the entrance and close the door.

Walk through the rooms in your mind. In one is your work. In another are the people close to you. In a third are other people’s expectations. In a fourth are all the tasks you have taken on. Go into each one and notice how you feel.

Then find the last door. Behind it there is no work, no family roles, no profession, no phone and no wishes belonging to others. There is only you.

Ask yourself: “Who am I when nobody expects me to be useful?”

Then: “What do I miss the most?”

And finally: “What do I want to bring back with me from this room?”

After the meditation write down the three answers. Leave the analysis for later. Read them again the next day and choose one real action for the following seven days.

The resolution

The Keeper of Silence’s resolution begins with the dream “I want to go somewhere and finally be alone”. The Hermit and 4 of Swords carry the need for distance, 10 of Wands and 9 of Swords reveal what has gathered, the High Priestess and the Star restore the inner compass, the Moon and Queen of Cups open the feelings, the Devil and 4 of Pentacles reach the habit of constant availability and control, Death and the Hanged Man break the old rhythm, the Empress and the Sun restore pleasure and vitality, and the World, the Magician and 4 of Wands lead towards a daily life in which your own space already has a place. At the start the question is “Where can I escape the noise?” In the end it sounds different: “Am I ready to guard my silence once I am back among the people I love?” Because a distant refuge can give you a few wonderful days. The real change begins when your own time stops being what is left over after everyone else.

Go on in the Game of the SoulIf you chose the Keeper of Silence, go on in the Game of the Soul FatedWays first through The Body. When the mind is used to explaining everything, the body often reacts faster to the overload, the people and the situations that have already become too much. After that open Letting Go and take there the habit, role or relationship that goes on taking up too large a part of your time. If after the silence you begin to sense that a larger life choice is coming too, The Crossroads will carry the story further. The Keeper of Silence sets out to find a place where the world will fall quiet for a while, and comes back with a far more valuable decision: “I am ready to give my own voice room every day.”

6 · The Returning One — You are looking for a way to come back different

For you the wish to go far away comes from the strange sense that you have to step away from your own life in order to see it clearly again. You have people you love, things you have built over years, a home, habits, work, a history. A great deal of it is precious. The problem is a different one: among the urgent, the necessary and the daily cares, the important things have gradually started to wait their turn. The conversation with someone close is left for the evening, the pleasure for the weekend, the personal dream for next year, and the time for you has mysteriously moved into the column marked “whatever is left over”.

That is why the faraway place draws you. You want to wake up somewhere your usual life will not begin five minutes after you open your eyes. From a distance you will see who you miss, what you lack, what you do not think about at all and what parts of the old no longer have the right to come back with you automatically.

This spread follows what you will come to value once you have moved away, what choice about your way of living you are actually making, which weights will try to come home along with you and what has to take real form after the return. With this archetype the most important day is the day after the journey. The most important is the first ordinary Monday after coming home.

1. The call

CardsThe World · 6 of Swords · 8 of Cups · The Hermit · Judgement

The World opens the story with the sense that a large cycle has reached a point of reckoning. You have gathered experience, created a particular life and can now look at it as a whole. That is exactly when the question of what comes next arrives. Is there something else you want to live through? Where have you stayed too long in the familiar? What have you postponed because there was always something more urgent?

6 of Swords carries the need for physical and mental distance. You want to step out for a while from the surroundings in which every decision already has a ready-made story. Far from home one worry can shrink, another can stay just as important, and a third can disappear from your thoughts altogether. That will be the first natural test of what deserves your energy.

8 of Cups adds the emotional withdrawal from part of your present rhythm. Something you accepted without much question until recently is starting to weigh on you. It may be a relationship, a professional role, constant availability or the way you distribute your time. Inwardly you already sense that the same formula will hardly be a good one for the years ahead.

The Hermit asks for a period alone with your own questions. Distance will give you the chance to think without an immediate reaction to other people’s needs. You will have time to ask yourself who you are outside the roles of parent, partner, professional, friend, the one who solves the problems. After so many years of living with different titles it can be interesting to stay for a while with only your own name.

Judgement ends the Call with the great reckoning: “If I go on the same way for another five years, will I be content with my choice?” The answer will determine what this journey means for you.

The five cards gather the first message: “I am ready to move away, in order to decide what part of my life deserves to continue with me.”

2. What you are looking for

Cards10 of Cups · 4 of Wands · 6 of Cups · The Sun · The Star

10 of Cups leads to the people with whom you feel real belonging. Distance will make one test very easy: who do you think of with warmth, whose voice do you want to hear, who do you want to share what you have lived with? Part of the answer about what home means will come through the people.

4 of Wands carries the sense of home itself. You want a place you come back to willingly. It may be your present home, changed in a new way, or the realisation that you now want to live elsewhere. What will matter more is the feeling that arrives at the thought of returning: joy, weight, impatience, reluctance? It will say a great deal.

6 of Cups brings back those small details that daily life has made almost invisible. A favourite coffee, a voice, a scent at home, a person who always knows what you mean, a place you pass every day. Distance can restore the value of small things you have taken for granted.

The Sun carries the search for joy and vitality. You want to remember what you look like when you have energy, curiosity and appetite for the day. That is a valuable marker. If somewhere far away you feel that version of yourself again, you will be able to ask what part of it is missing from your daily life.

The Star adds the future. You want to come back with the sense that something good is ahead, and that you yourself can help it along. After a long period of dealing with what is immediate, you begin to want a dream to look towards again.

You are looking for home, belonging, joy and a reason to expect your own future with interest.

3. The real reason

CardsThe Lovers · Temperance · The High Priestess · 2 of Cups · Queen of Cups

The Lovers place your values at the centre of this story. The journey will bring you back to the simple and very uncomfortable question: “Am I living according to what I say is important to me?” If love matters, how much time do you actually give it? If freedom is a value, how much room does it have in your week? If family is the centre, are you truly present in the shared time? The calendar has the unpleasant habit of keeping rather accurate records.

Temperance speaks of a lost measure. One part of life has been given too much room at the expense of the others. Work, caring, other people’s problems, ambition or the habit of always doing one more thing have pushed aside areas that also matter to you. The journey will help you feel what rhythm you want from here on.

The High Priestess restores the quiet knowing you probably already carry. You know which person is important. You know what you are tired of. You know what you are missing. Daily life simply leaves too little space for those truths to be heard clearly enough.

2 of Cups puts a special emphasis on mutual relationships. Distance will make visible who keeps the connection with you out of love, who reaches for you naturally, with whom the sharing works without obligation. A particular bond may take on far greater value precisely when the physical closeness is missing for a while.

Queen of Cups ends the position with the need to live closer to your own feelings. For a long time you have been able to function independently of them. The next period wants you to include them in your decisions.

The real reason is the wish to reconnect the way you live with what you genuinely love and value.

4. The baggage

Cards10 of Wands · 5 of Cups · 4 of Pentacles · The Devil · 9 of Swords

10 of Wands carries the old habit of taking on too much. The journey may give you magnificent promises of a new regime, but after your return the work will be in the same place, the people will have needs again, and the phone will probably not have reached spiritual enlightenment in your absence. If the very way you take on responsibility stays the same, the old rhythm will come back easily.

5 of Cups carries the disappointments and the regrets. Some of them may be about lost time. A person you were not with enough. A dream you left for later. Years that passed too quickly. This card wants you to use the regret as information about the future, rather than turning the past into a trial against yourself.

4 of Pentacles guards the security. You may have built a stable system that both protects and limits you. Income, a home, a way of working, a family structure or a habit give predictability, and that is why they change with difficulty. You are about to decide what part of that security is valuable and what price you are already paying for it.

The Devil brings in the old attachments. A need for control, constant availability, work without end, a person you have stayed bound to in a difficult way, or the conviction that you are valuable mainly when you are needed. These patterns come home easily along with the souvenirs.

9 of Swords carries the fears about change. “What if I ruin what I already have?” “What if those close to me do not accept the new rules?” “What if I change too much?” The mind can produce an impressive number of arguments for restoring the old regime before the suitcase is even unpacked.

The baggage contains the excessive responsibilities, the regrets, the fear of losing security and the patterns that can bring the old daily life back under a new name.

5. The threshold

CardsDeath · The Tower · Justice · Ace of Swords · The Hanged Man

Death wants one part of the old way of living genuinely to end. The promise “after the holiday I will rest more” will not be enough. Some habit, role, commitment or rule has to be given an ending, so that there is room for the new.

The Tower brings a realisation that will be hard to forget after the return. You may understand how much unnecessary tension you have been accepting as normal, how little time you have given to a person you love, or how much energy goes into something that no longer has the same value. After such an insight, going back to the old regime will require pretending that you have not seen the obvious.

Justice wants the new rules to be clear. If you want more time for the family, it has to appear in the calendar. If you want work to end at a particular hour, that hour has to mean something. If a commitment is delegated, it now has another owner. The new life begins to be measured through decisions.

Ace of Swords brings the conversation. You may have to tell somebody what is changing. “I have decided to guard this time.” “I am ready to change the way I work.” “I have realised that this relationship needs something else.” Clear words will make the intention visible to others too.

The Hanged Man ends the Threshold with a new view of time. You will have to leave part of your days unfilled. To accept that a free hour has value even when it produces nothing. For someone used to optimising their life, that can turn out to be an almost avant-garde concept.

The Threshold says: “I am ready to change, concretely, the way I live, in order to protect what I already know is important.”

6. The gift of the road

CardsStrength · The Magician · 9 of Pentacles · 3 of Wands · King of Cups

Strength restores the ability to make a choice and to withstand the reactions to it. The new boundaries will probably not delight absolutely everyone. You, however, will have more inner confidence to guard them, because you now know why they are necessary.

The Magician gives authorship. Instead of waiting for life to become more comfortable by itself, you begin to change it through actions. Schedule, work, home, relationships, money, free time — whatever needs a different form will gradually be given one.

9 of Pentacles restores the pleasure of your own time and of independence. You will value more the moments that belong only to you. This can lead to a new personal activity, a journey alone, a space of your own or stronger financial independence.

3 of Wands turns your gaze forward. Distance has opened a perspective and you are already thinking about how you want the coming years to look. New plans appear, journeys, professional ideas or the wish for a larger change that used to seem far away.

King of Cups brings emotional maturity. You will be better at being close to people and guarding yourself at the same time. You will tell support apart from rescuing, love from constant sacrifice, and closeness from the duty to carry other people’s moods.

The gift of the road is the ability to take part in your own life with more personal choice, emotional maturity and freedom to decide where your energy goes.

7. The return

CardsWheel of Fortune · The Emperor · 10 of Pentacles · 6 of Wands · Ace of Pentacles

The Wheel of Fortune brings the sense that the return arrives in a new period. Some circumstances may take a new direction while you are still away. An opportunity, a conversation, a decision or an event will make the change easier to begin. You come back to a physically familiar life, but the time is already a different one.

The Emperor wants structure. The new intentions will be given rules, deadlines and a form. If you want more rest, it goes into the schedule. If you want a financial change, a plan appears. If you want a new home, the research begins. If relationships are a priority, the time for them becomes protected. The spiritual souvenir now has a spreadsheet, and however prosaic that sounds, it is a good sign.

10 of Pentacles turns the focus back to what lasts. After the journey you will value more strongly the people, the home and what you want to remain years from now. Decisions will start being measured by the question: “Does this contribute to the life I want to have over the long term?”

6 of Wands brings the confidence that comes from a real change. When you keep the first new boundary, take the first step towards a plan or see relationships improve after your decision, you will feel that the journey has genuinely changed something. That small victory will give strength for the next one.

Ace of Pentacles ends the story with a new concrete beginning. Work, a project, a home, a financial step, a course, a new routine or a decision about how you spend your time can lay the first foundation of the next period.

The return now has an entirely concrete message: “I am ready to turn what I understood far away into a life I actually live at home.”

Practice: “A letter from the day I come back”

For the Returning One I would choose a written practice, because his most important question is what he will do after the journey.

Imagine that you have spent a month far away. Tomorrow you go home. Take a sheet of paper and begin the letter with the words: “I have come back and I now understand…”

Continue without a plan. Write about what you missed, what you came to value again, what you barely thought about, and the decisions that appeared while you were away.

Then divide the next sheet into three parts: “I bring back with me”, “I leave along the way” and “I begin after the return”.

In the first part write the people, values, habits and relationships you want to guard more consciously. In the second put the weights, the old rules and the patterns that have run their course. In the third write the new actions: more time with a particular person, a different working rhythm, a project, movement, creative work, a financial change, a journey or a decision about the home.

Then choose one from each category. One you will guard. One you will leave. One you will begin.

Finish the three sentences: “I am ready to guard…”, “I am ready to leave…” and “I am ready to begin…”

Next to the last one write a date within seven days.

Ritual: “The key of the return”

Choose an old key, a small stone, a coin or another object you can take in your hand. It will stand for the home you are coming back to.

Put the object in front of you and write on three small sheets: “What I love in my life”, “What already costs me too much” and “What I want to change”. Under each heading write three concrete things.

Then take the key in your hand and say to yourself: “I am ready to come back to my life with open eyes. I am ready to guard its valuable parts and to change what I no longer want to carry in the old way.”

Leave the key somewhere visible for thirty days. Every time you notice it, ask one question: “Did I live today, even a little, in the way I decided to live after the return?”

After a month put the object away or carry it with you as a symbol of the decision. That way the souvenir will have a little more work to do than the usual gathering of dust on a shelf.

Meditation: “The door opens”

Close your eyes and imagine that the journey has ended. In front of you is your own front door, with the suitcase in your hand. You have a few seconds before you unlock it.

Look in your mind at the suitcase and ask yourself: “What have I brought with me that I want to stay?”

Then: “What have I left far away and refuse to take back?”

Then unlock the door and go in. Look around your home as if you were seeing it for the first time. What is dear to you? What do you want to change? Who do you want to embrace? Which task no longer looks so important? What will you do in the very first week?

Finally imagine the first ordinary Monday after the return. You wake up and you are already among the familiar duties. Ask yourself: “What will I do differently today?”

After the meditation write down only one answer. That is the one that deserves the first real step.

The resolution

The Returning One’s resolution begins with the wish to move away in order to see his own life from another perspective. The World and 6 of Swords open the distance, 8 of Cups and the Hermit free space for the reckoning, 10 of Cups and 4 of Wands restore the value of home and of those close, the Lovers and Temperance measure life against personal values, 10 of Wands and the Devil bring out the old weights, Death and Justice ask for new rules, Strength and the Magician restore the authorship, and the Emperor, 10 of Pentacles and Ace of Pentacles turn the decision into reality. At the start you ask: “What will I find far away?” In the end the question is: “Am I ready to defend what I understood, once I am back inside my own life?” The journey ends at the airport or the station. The real return continues long after that — in the way you begin to use your next day.

Go on in the Game of the SoulIf you chose the Returning One, go on in the Game of the Soul FatedWays through The Celestial Teacher, if you want to look at the larger period in which this reassessment is happening. If the strongest discovery has to do with the people you truly want to stay part of your life, open My People. And once you have understood what you now want to leave behind you, Letting Go can give this story its natural continuation. The Returning One sets off far away in order to understand what he has at home, and comes back with the most important decision of all: “I am ready to live in such a way that what is valuable to me gets time right now.”

✦ An exchange of energy ✦

The universe hears what you give

Everything you do from the heart — a word, an action, a gift — comes back. Not tomorrow, not by the end of the week, but at the moment when enough of it has gathered. If these words have reached you and something in them recognised something in you, that is no accident.

And if you feel like giving a little of that energy back, every amount is received with gratitude and turns into new writing, new spreads, new words that will reach someone who needs them exactly in time. That is how the circle keeps turning.
