The Thread Back

Four images. The reaction arrives before the explanation — and the thread leads back to the story it started from.

To the choice

← Blog

Life knows how to change the people, the places and the circumstances, and yet some stories keep finding their way back to us. A conversation touches an old worry. Someone else's need wakes the familiar feeling that you must do something. A piece of criticism weighs more than it should. An opportunity you wanted suddenly arrives with so many questions that the future seems to be waiting for a business plan, two reserve budgets and a notarised signature.

The most interesting part is that the reaction often arrives before the explanation. Reason is still gathering the facts while inside you the story has already begun. You recognise the danger, you expect the outcome, you brace for whatever may follow. And it is exactly from that feeling that “The Thread Back” begins.

The spread starts from what is happening now and gradually turns time backwards. You will reach an early scene that left its mark, and after it an older story in which the same feeling had an entirely different cause. You will see who you were, what happened, how it ended and what you brought with you as an unfinished promise, a fear, a guilt or an expectation.

Then the thread comes back to your present life. That part matters most, because you will see in what way the old story still takes part in your decisions and how soon it may show itself again. You will recognise the moment when the usual script begins, and this time you will have the chance to choose a different continuation.

Look at the four options and don't analyse them for long. Let the first reaction choose. The image that draws you, irritates you, unsettles you or makes you come back to it once more has probably caught your thread. The mind can join in a little later — it rarely misses an opportunity like this.

And the last card will open a question worth the whole journey back: what would your life look like if the old story no longer decided your next choice?

Choose. Then follow the thread backwards. You may discover that the feeling which seems so familiar today carries a memory from a story that began long before the present one.

Touch the image that holds you — it will open right below here.

1 · The thread of abandonment

Your thread runs through closeness, through waiting, and through that particular moment when the person opposite slightly changes their rhythm and something in you already senses that things are ending. A situation is coming in which you will have to tell the real distance apart from the old fear that reads it as a parting. The story goes back to an early experience of absence, then opens an older bond broken off suddenly, and returns to the present, where this time you will have the chance to ask for clarity while there is still time and to stay inside your own life instead of becoming, once again, the one who waits.

1 · The trigger

Eight of Cups · The Hermit · Four of Swords · Six of Swords · Two of Wands

The thread will be activated through a person who changes their behaviour. The Eight of Cups brings the first withdrawal — fewer conversations, less reaching out, the sense that part of their attention is already directed elsewhere. The Hermit adds a closing in and a need for space. The Four of Swords gives a pause, delayed replies or a stretch in which the contact becomes considerably quieter. The Six of Swords may bring travel, a move, work far away or another real reason for distance. The Two of Wands shows that the person will be thinking about their next direction, and that will be the moment when the old question appears almost at once: “Are they going to leave?” The situation will be no accident. It will give you the chance to see how quickly a pause turns into an inner farewell before the other person has even finished their coffee.

2 · The reaction

Nine of Swords · Five of Pentacles · Eight of Swords · Seven of Cups · Queen of Cups

The Nine of Swords will start filling the missing information with scenarios. The Five of Pentacles will touch the sense that you could end up outside the life of someone who was close to you only yesterday. The Eight of Swords will take you back over conversations, gestures and small changes that you will begin to examine very carefully. The Seven of Cups will produce more possible explanations than the real situation probably deserves, and the Queen of Cups will amplify everything, because your feeling for this person will be genuine. During this period you may catch yourself checking how long it has been since the last message, how their voice sounded and why they put a full stop exactly where they usually put a smile. The inner investigator will be beautifully prepared. Your task will be to wait for the facts to arrive at the scene.

3 · The first scene

Six of Cups · Ten of Cups · Page of Cups · Four of Wands · Five of Cups

The thread goes back to childhood, to home and to a person whose presence you took as a natural part of your world. The Six of Cups shows the early years, the Ten of Cups ties the scene to family and belonging, and the Page of Cups describes you as a child who feels closeness and emotional shifts keenly. The Four of Wands leads to a particular home, a family place or a period in which you believed certain people would always be near. Then comes the Five of Cups and someone begins to be missing. There may have been a separation between adults, a departure, work far away, illness or another family change. You were left with the expectation that the familiar would return, and that is exactly when you began to link love with the possibility that a person may suddenly vanish from your daily life.

4 · What you understood then

Three of Swords · Five of Swords · Nine of Wands · Four of Cups · Seven of Swords

The Three of Swords left the first conclusion: someone close can be absent and you have no power to bring them back. The Five of Swords adds the helplessness before the decisions of adults. The Nine of Wands begins watching for the next sign that something is changing. The Four of Cups remembers the cooling, and the Seven of Swords adds the fear that a drawing away can start quietly and only be understood once it has already become serious. Since then a rule has stayed in you: “When I love, I have to watch whether the person is still with me.” It has probably helped you notice a great many nuances in relationships. Over time, though, it also starts registering movements that are simply part of two people's ordinary lives.

5 · Why this is not the whole explanation

The Moon · The High Priestess · The Wheel of Fortune · Judgement · Two of Swords

The Moon shows that your reaction to distance is deeper than one childhood memory. The High Priestess brings a memory that appears through a sensation, a dream, a recurring type of relationship or the sudden feeling that you already know this story. The Wheel of Fortune returns the same rhythm through different people: strong closeness, a promise, a period of waiting, then the fear that the bond is slipping away. Judgement opens the old scene again, and the Two of Swords shows how long you have wavered between “I'm exaggerating” and “I'm feeling something I have already lived through”. During the next situation of this kind that feeling will be especially strong, and it is exactly then that the thread will show where it comes from.

6 · The scene behind the memory

The Lovers · The Star · Three of Wands · The Chariot · King of Wands

The Lovers open a strong mutual bond between two people who chose each other and shared a picture of the future. The Star brings the promise and the hope that this love would last. The Three of Wands introduces a distant place, a road or an opportunity that required one of you to go. The Chariot shows the actual departure, and the King of Wands describes the person who took that road — decisive, active and convinced that in time he would return or that the bond would survive the absence. A promise stayed between you. The parting looked temporary. You believed in the continuation and began waiting for someone who left intending to be part of your life again.

7 · Who you were

The Hanged Man · Temperance · Four of Pentacles · Knight of Pentacles · Six of Pentacles

The Hanged Man shows that you stayed. Temperance brings a long stretch in which you believed time was working for you both. The Four of Pentacles keeps the bond through a letter, an object, a promise, a memory or a place that carried particular meaning. The Knight of Pentacles shows loyalty to the agreement and a readiness to carry on with your life without inwardly freeing that person's place. The Six of Pentacles keeps the hope that one day you will receive back what you saved for them. You were the one who waits and believes. You probably turned down other possibilities or postponed important decisions, because “he will come back” was part of your picture of the future. The waiting was so serious that it almost deserves an employment contract and paid leave.

8 · How it ended

The Tower · Death · Ten of Swords · Knight of Swords · Eight of Wands

The Tower cuts the long wait off abruptly. Death shows an ending after which the former future can no longer come about. The Ten of Swords brings the finality. The Knight of Swords introduces a person or a piece of news arriving fast, and the Eight of Wands shows how little time there was between receiving the information and grasping what it meant. There may have been a death, an accident, a war, a forced separation or an event that permanently prevented the return. You received the ending as news while inwardly you were still living inside the promise. That is exactly why the story stayed open: until the last moment you were expecting a continuation.

9 · What was left unfinished

Two of Cups · Ace of Cups · The Hierophant · Ten of Pentacles · The Emperor

The Two of Cups and the Ace of Cups show that the feelings between you were still alive. The Hierophant brings a promise, a vow, a plan for marriage or an official shared future. The Ten of Pentacles adds a home, a family and a life the two of you had pictured for the long term. The Emperor shows that this plan was concrete: a place, a way of living, a decision about how you would go on together. What stayed unfinished was the “us” — that future which had been chosen and then cut off before it could be lived. It is exactly this unfinishedness that makes part of you keep a bond today longer than reality sometimes justifies. The old heart still believes that if it waits long enough, this time the story may get the ending it once lost.

10 · How it carried over

The Devil · Knight of Cups · Queen of Pentacles · Two of Pentacles · Page of Swords

The Devil turns strong attachment into a fear of being cut off. The Knight of Cups shows that when you fall in love you very quickly begin to see the potential for a future. The Queen of Pentacles wants the bond to have a place in everyday life, safety and durability. The Two of Pentacles reacts to every change of rhythm, and the Page of Swords starts observing. In the coming period the person beside you may become busier, travel, change their schedule or simply ask for more time to themselves. That will be the test. The old pattern will want to translate distance as an approaching loss. This time you will be able to stop before the anxiety writes the whole ending by itself.

11 · What life is already asking you to stop repeating

Seven of Pentacles · Ten of Wands · Three of Pentacles · Eight of Pentacles · Five of Wands

The Seven of Pentacles shows a long wait for a result from a bond into which you have already put a great deal. The Ten of Wands piles up the tiredness. The Three of Pentacles raises the question of how much the other person is really taking part. The Eight of Pentacles shows the tendency to try once more, to repair, to understand and to give extra time. The Five of Wands brings the struggle for a place in a story that should already be showing by itself where it is going. A moment will come when you feel you are waiting for someone to decide whether they want to be with you. That is exactly when you will need to ask yourself a different question: “Am I chosen in this relationship, or am I in an open-ended application process?” The answer will give you far more clarity than another month of observation.

12 · What you can do differently

Queen of Swords · Ace of Swords · King of Swords · Seven of Wands · The Magician

The Queen of Swords will point you towards a conversation in good time. The Ace of Swords wants a precise question and a precise answer. The King of Swords looks at actions and facts. The Seven of Wands guards your boundary, and the Magician returns the initiative. In the next important situation there will be no need to wait weeks to find out what is going on. You will be able to say: “I'm someone who needs clarity. What do you want from this relationship? How do you see the coming period? Is there a place for me in it?” The answer may not be exactly the one you dreamed of hearing, but it will give you something far more valuable than waiting — a reality on which you can base a decision of your own.

13 · If there were no karma

The Empress · Nine of Pentacles · The Sun · Ace of Wands · King of Cups

The Empress opens a love in which you can receive attention, care and presence. The Nine of Pentacles keeps your life full regardless of what the other person is doing during the day. The Sun brings clear feelings and an open attitude. The Ace of Wands returns the wish to move forward, to begin and to live love with more vitality. The King of Cups shows a person able to be present emotionally, to speak about his feelings and to create a sense of mature closeness.

Ahead of you lies the possibility of a bond in which you will not spend so much time reading signs. The person will show their interest through actions, will speak more clearly and will have a place for you in their real life. The most important change, though, will be in you. You will begin to feel: “I am chosen and at the same time free to live my own life.” Then a few hours of silence will simply remain a few hours of silence. The historical era will finally be called off.

The thread of abandonment returns to your life every time an absence starts to look like a final ending. The next important person, or the next important stretch within a relationship, will give you the chance to break that old rhythm. There will be distance, a change or a moment of uncertainty. This time you will ask in good time. You will hear the answer. You will look at the actions. And if there is no movement towards you, you will carry on with your own life instead of keeping an empty place for a promise with no date.

That is the change in your thread: “I am able to love without turning love into waiting.”

In the Game of the SoulIf this thread is yours and you want to see what is really happening between the two of you, go into Love.

2 · The thread of duty

Your thread runs through responsibility, through care and through that inner “I must”, which you manage to hear before anyone has even formed their request. Very early on you got used to being the person who can be relied on, and that has brought you trust, respect and a fair number of other people's tasks that have somehow obtained permanent residence in your life. A situation is coming in which you will be needed again, but this time the choice will not be how much more you can carry. You will have to decide what is genuinely yours and where someone else's life should stay in the hands of its owner.

1 · The trigger

Ten of Wands · Six of Pentacles · Queen of Pentacles · Three of Pentacles · Page of Cups

The thread will open through a person who needs help exactly when you already have enough on your plate. The Ten of Wands brings the accumulation. The Six of Pentacles points straight to giving — time, money, contacts, work or a particular decision. The Queen of Pentacles suggests someone close, a family matter, caregiving, an everyday problem or a practical difficulty. The Three of Pentacles will draw you into solving it, and the Page of Cups will make refusing hard, because the person opposite will wake your compassion. At first it will be “just one thing”. Then another will appear, and after it probably something that somehow requires two phone calls, a document and a person “only you know where to find”. You will feel the old impulse to take it all on. That is exactly when you will hear the question that opens the thread: “How will they manage without me?”

2 · The reaction

Nine of Wands · Strength · Two of Pentacles · Seven of Wands · King of Wands

The Nine of Wands shows that even tired you will find a little more resource. Strength will gather you and switch on the familiar “I'll manage”. The Two of Pentacles will start shifting the schedule and your own plans. The Seven of Wands will create the feeling that you have to hold the situation together, and the King of Wands will demand a quick decision. Very easily you can end up as the person who calls, organises, checks, reminds and already knows more about the problem than the one who originally had it. The people around you get used to such a quality fast. A reliable person is a wonderful institution, especially when they have never posted their opening hours anywhere. In the coming situation you will have a chance to make the first change: to help without automatically taking over.

3 · The first scene

Page of Pentacles · Six of Cups · Eight of Pentacles · Queen of Pentacles · Three of Pentacles

The Page of Pentacles goes back to a child who was seen early on as sensible and capable. The Six of Cups leads to the family setting. The Eight of Pentacles shows small tasks that gradually became more. The Queen of Pentacles ties the scene to care and daily life, and the Three of Pentacles shows that your help was noticed and valued. You may have been helping a parent, an elderly person or a younger child, or taking on more than was usual for your age. You may have sensed when the adults were tired, worried or overloaded and started doing on your own what would make things easier for them. You probably heard: “I can rely on you”, “You're sensible”, “You'll manage.” The praise was deserved and gave you a sense of place among people. Gradually a deeper rule was added to it: “When I'm useful, I matter.”

4 · What you understood then

The Emperor · Justice · King of Pentacles · Four of Pentacles · Eight of Pentacles

The Emperor shapes the conviction: “I'm the one who takes things in hand.” Justice adds responsibility to a promise and an obligation. The King of Pentacles links maturity with reliability. The Four of Pentacles guards the resources, and the Eight of Pentacles keeps working until the task is done. Since then, faced with uncertainty, you start by acting. If someone is confused, you think. If someone hesitates, you find an option. If a situation falls apart into eight pieces, you are probably already looking for the right boxes. This is one of your great strengths. In the coming period, though, you will also see its price: when you are constantly the most reliable person in the room, those around you gradually begin to leave their rucksacks beside your chair.

5 · Why the childhood story doesn't explain everything

The High Priestess · Judgement · The Hermit · The Wheel of Fortune · The Moon

The High Priestess shows that the sense of responsibility existed in you before it had a clear reason from this life. Judgement brings back an old theme for resolution. The Hermit carries the early self-reliance, the Wheel of Fortune shows the repetition, and the Moon opens a memory that arrives through feeling. You will recognise it in the moments when someone else's problem instantly becomes an inner obligation. Someone is upset and you start thinking how to help them. Someone has made a poor choice and you look for a way to repair the consequences. If someone close is suffering, your own pleasure can take on a strange taste of guilt. This reaction is older than the people currently around you. The thread leads to a life in which responsibility really was tied to the fate of many people.

6 · The scene behind the memory

The Hierophant · Justice · Ten of Pentacles · The Emperor · Three of Pentacles

The Hierophant opens a life in which you had a vow, an office or a role with clearly defined duties. Justice shows rules and consequences. The Ten of Pentacles introduces a large group of people, a lineage or a community bound together across generations. The Emperor gives the power to make decisions, and the Three of Pentacles shows that those decisions were part of a shared system in which everyone had their task. You were the person people turned to when an important decision had to be made. You may have been an elder, a steward, an official, a religious figure, the head of a community or someone whose position included care for others. There was a promise you took very seriously: “I am responsible for these people.” You were expected to settle disputes, distribute help, keep order and act in difficulty. Your personal life gradually began to fit around that role. When everyone comes to you with a question, your own questions somehow learn to wait very politely at the end of the queue.

7 · Who you were

King of Pentacles · Ten of Wands · Six of Pentacles · Knight of Pentacles · The Emperor

The King of Pentacles shows a person relied on for a practical solution. The Six of Pentacles gives the ability to distribute help and resources according to need. The Knight of Pentacles carries out his duties consistently. The Emperor brings authority and responsibility, and the Ten of Wands shows how many people and problems gradually came to depend on you. You were the one they looked for in a crisis. When it had to be decided who would receive help, you took part. When there was a dispute, your decision carried weight. When the group was under threat, people expected you to find a way out. In time the role became part of your identity: “I am needed. I am the one who will manage.” And the more people depended on you, the harder it became to admit that there are situations where your own strength may not be enough.

8 · How it ended

Five of Cups · Five of Pentacles · Ten of Swords · Four of Swords · Justice

The Five of Cups brings loss and deep regret. The Five of Pentacles shows people in dire straits — hunger, illness, poverty, isolation, or a period in which the community needed more help than it was possible to give. The Ten of Swords shows a final ending. The Four of Swords puts you in a position where you can no longer act, and Justice leaves the final reckoning. It seems a crisis came that exceeded your capacity. It may have been an epidemic, a famine, a conflict, persecution, a social collapse or another event in which the people you were responsible for suffered. You did a great deal, but you could not help everyone. It is possible that a particular person or group was left without the protection you had promised. After the ending you were left with the sentence: “I should have done more.” This is exactly the wound of this option. You did not lose your position. You lost people you believed you had to be strong enough for.

9 · What was left unfinished

Judgement · Ten of Wands · Five of Cups · Justice · Six of Cups

Judgement returns you to those you felt responsible for. The Ten of Wands goes on carrying the load. The Five of Cups keeps the regret. Justice weighs again and again what you did and what could still have been done. The Six of Cups preserves the emotional bond with the people of that story. What stayed unfinished was the guilt. In the present it appears as the wish to make up for things even when nobody is blaming you. If someone close is suffering, you may feel you must do something. If someone fails, you start checking whether you helped enough. If you give ten, your inner accountant discovers with remarkable ease why eleven would probably have been more suitable. A situation will come in which you hear “I could have done more” again, and it is exactly then that you will be able to recognise how old that verdict is.

10 · How it carried over

Eight of Pentacles · Queen of Pentacles · Six of Pentacles · Three of Pentacles · The Devil

The Eight of Pentacles turns usefulness into a daily habit. The Queen of Pentacles looks after the practical details. The Six of Pentacles gives. The Three of Pentacles takes on its own share and, very easily, a little of someone else's. The Devil shows the moment when this role begins to determine your own decisions. In the coming period you will see very clearly who around you has got used to relying on you more than is necessary. It may be someone close, a colleague, a friend or a person you have helped for a long time. You will have a plan of your own, and they will turn up with a need of theirs. Your first impulse will be to rearrange everything. That is exactly where the new choice comes in: “I matter even on a day when I'm not the one who fixes the situation.”

11 · What life is already asking you to stop repeating

Knight of Pentacles · Ten of Wands · Four of Pentacles · Eight of Pentacles · The Hierophant

The Knight of Pentacles keeps fulfilling the promise. The Eight of Pentacles does what is required. The Hierophant guards the old rule, the Four of Pentacles holds on to the role, and the Ten of Wands shows that it now weighs more than is reasonable. An obligation will come up that you have been fulfilling for a long time, and for the first time you will look at it from the outside. It may be constant help to a person, financial support, a family role, a work commitment or a promise made under entirely different circumstances. You will ask yourself: “Am I still choosing this?” If the answer is “I do it because everyone expects it”, the contract is ready for review. Duty is fond of automatic renewal. The small print usually reads: “Until someone finally asks why.”

12 · What you can do differently

Six of Pentacles · Temperance · Three of Pentacles · Queen of Cups · Justice

The Six of Pentacles restores the balance between giving and receiving. Temperance sets the measure. The Three of Pentacles shares the work among more people. The Queen of Cups keeps the compassion, and Justice returns to each their own portion. In the situations ahead you will start asking different questions: “Which part of this is genuinely mine? What can the person do alone? How much help am I willing to give? What will be left for me afterwards?” You will let some people solve their own problems. You may watch them be surprised first, then think, then — lo and behold — find a solution. That is exactly how you will learn that someone else's independence can also be a form of care.

13 · If there were no karma

The Fool · The Star · Ace of Wands · The World · Nine of Cups

The Fool opens a choice made according to your own wish. The Star returns a dream that has long been waiting for its time. The Ace of Wands brings a new beginning. The World widens your life through a new setting, a project, travel, study or a big personal change. The Nine of Cups gives satisfaction from something you chose for yourself.

When other people's tasks start taking their real place, time will free up. Energy will follow, and after it a wish you kept leaving for “later”. You may start a project, travel, change direction, study, or simply begin planning around the question “What do I want?” That change will be the most unusual of all: your decisions will gradually stop starting from the list of people who might need you.

The thread of duty begins in an old story in which you carried real responsibility for people and experienced their loss as your own unkept promise. That is why someone else's difficulty reaches you so easily today as a personal task. A situation is coming in which you will help less than your old habit demands, and you will discover that the person opposite manages anyway. That very moment will change a great deal.

The sentence “I am valuable” will no longer need proof in the form of one more task, one more rescued day or one more person whose life you carried instead of them. You will go on being the person who can be relied on. Only now you will finally be among the people you take care of.

In the Game of the SoulThe role of the one who carries everything rarely begins with you. To see where it comes from along the family line, go into The Lineage.

3 · The thread of the voice

Your thread is connected with the voice, with truth and with the right to take up space with an opinion of your own. It is activated most strongly in front of people who have power, influence or the confidence that the last word belongs to them by default. In such moments one part of you knows perfectly well what it thinks, while another starts editing the sentence before you have even said it. The story goes back to the early years, when you learned to watch the reactions of those around you, then opens an older scene of public conflict and a lost position. In the present a period is coming in which you will again have to choose between staying silent, defending yourself tooth and nail, or simply saying clearly: “This is me. This is my opinion.”

1 · The trigger

King of Swords · Justice · The Emperor · Three of Pentacles · Judgement

The King of Swords introduces a person who speaks categorically, evaluates, sets the rules or has the power to decide. Justice adds an official assessment, a document, a ruling, an interview, an inspection or a conversation in which arguments will matter. The Emperor strengthens the authority — a boss, a teacher, an institution, a specialist, a parental figure or someone used to others accommodating them. The Three of Pentacles ties the situation to work, a project or a setting where your abilities are visible. Judgement suggests a coming moment when you will be called to give an answer, defend a decision or state a position. It may begin quite formally: someone will ask for an explanation, question your idea or make a remark in front of others. Your body will recognise the situation far faster than your mind. Your voice will become more careful, you will start choosing words and within seconds you will assess who holds more power in the room. The problem is that your inner legal department is working at full capacity before the case has officially been filed.

2 · The reaction

Seven of Wands · Nine of Wands · Two of Swords · Queen of Swords · Strength

The Seven of Wands puts you on standby to defend your position. The Nine of Wands remembers earlier clashes and immediately expects the next blow. The Two of Swords creates the brief moment of holding back — do I say it, do I keep quiet, how much exactly can I afford? The Queen of Swords has already prepared an excellent answer, punctuation included. Strength, however, holds the impulse and makes you master the reaction first. So in the presence of strong authority you can move between two extremes. In one case you are very restrained and only after the conversation think of the magnificent reply you should have given an hour ago. In the other you are so well prepared to defend yourself that an ordinary question receives a plea in three parts. In the coming period you will have several situations in which this reaction becomes visible to you. They are exactly the ones that will show you how often the defence begins before anyone has actually attacked.

3 · The first scene

Page of Swords · Six of Cups · The Hierophant · Five of Swords · Eight of Pentacles

The Page of Swords goes back to a child who watches very carefully. The Six of Cups places the scene in the early years. The Hierophant introduces an adult, a school, a family rule or a setting with a clear idea of what is right to say. The Five of Swords speaks of an argument, a humiliation, a sharp answer or a situation after which you understood that words can have a price. The Eight of Pentacles shows how you gradually perfected the skill of expressing yourself in a way that avoids the unpleasant reaction. You were probably a very observant child. You knew which adult took questions well, in front of whom it was wise to speak briefly and when it was better to read the mood of the room first. You may have been corrected sharply, interrupted, mocked for an opinion or accused of “talking too much”, “arguing”, “answering back” or “not knowing when to be quiet”. In that period you began developing a particular ability: before saying what you think, to predict how the person opposite will react.

4 · What you understood then

Eight of Swords · Two of Swords · Four of Pentacles · The Hierophant · Page of Pentacles

The Eight of Swords is the first restriction: “I have to be careful what I say.” The Two of Swords adds the hesitation about whether to speak at all. The Four of Pentacles keeps the thoughts inside, the Hierophant gives weight to rules and authority, and the Page of Pentacles begins learning how to be “correct”. So you understood that safety depends on good judgement. If you are among people with more power, you first have to see what is permitted. If your opinion differs, you have to weigh the price. If someone reacts sharply, next time you will probably phrase everything more carefully. Over the years this can turn into an inner editor who checks the sentences at the door. The editor is very diligent. A deadline for finishing the edit, however, is rarely given.

5 · Why this is not the whole explanation

The Hermit · The High Priestess · The Moon · The Wheel of Fortune · Judgement

The Hermit shows a tendency to hold your thoughts inside first. The High Priestess speaks of an old memory around silence and hidden knowledge. The Moon adds a fear that is hard to explain with one particular childhood event. The Wheel of Fortune returns the same plot with different people and circumstances. Judgement says the theme has now reached a moment when it must be heard again. You will recognise it by the strength of your reaction. Someone may simply interrupt you and a feeling appears in you as if your right to speak at all were being questioned. Public criticism can occupy you long after the event itself. You will react especially strongly when you know you are right but the person opposite has more power. In such situations the old memory wakes and the thread goes further back, to a life in which the price of words was much higher.

6 · The scene behind the memory

Justice · Judgement · Five of Swords · The Hierophant · The Tower

Justice opens a scene of accusation, dispute, a court ruling or a public assessment. Judgement introduces testimony, charges or a public pronouncement. The Five of Swords shows a fight whose aim was victory and the destruction of the opponent. The Hierophant links the conflict with an institution, religious power, law, tradition or an established social order. The Tower brings the moment when your whole position changes abruptly. It seems you found yourself in a conflict in which you said something that touched powerful people or an established rule. You may have been defending a decision, an idea, a piece of knowledge, a person or a public position. You had arguments and you believed in your words. Against you, however, stood a system with far greater power. What follows is an accusation, an official ruling or a public rejection. This is a scene in which truth and power turned out to be on different sides of a table, and the table definitely belonged to power.

7 · Who you were

Queen of Wands · The Magician · Six of Wands · King of Wands · Three of Cups

The Queen of Wands describes a vivid, visible person who naturally draws attention. The Magician gives the power of speech, the ability to persuade and the capacity to turn an idea into action. The Six of Wands shows recognition and people who followed or listened to you. The King of Wands adds influence and leadership. The Three of Cups shows a circle of like-minded people, an audience or a community around you. You were a person whose words carried weight. You probably spoke in front of people, taught, advised, led, or were part of an intellectual, civic or spiritual circle. Those around you knew who you were and expected to hear your opinion. It was exactly your visibility that made the conflict so dangerous. If an unknown person says an inconvenient truth, it can be ignored. When a person with influence says it in front of an audience, the hearings begin.

8 · How it ended

Ten of Swords · Five of Swords · The Tower · Five of Pentacles · Six of Swords

The Ten of Swords shows a defeat with very heavy consequences. The Five of Swords adds betrayal or an unfair fight. The Tower takes away the position, the security or the public standing. The Five of Pentacles speaks of exclusion, loss of support and a period outside the community. The Six of Swords brings departure, exile or a forced removal. You probably lost your position very quickly. Someone from your own circle may have withdrawn their support or given information against you. A ruling followed that left you without your former influence. You may have been forced to leave a place, a community or a public role. The strongest imprint remained from the experience: “I am visible and therefore I can be struck.” It is exactly that link between visibility and danger that carries across the thread.

9 · What was left unfinished

Ace of Swords · Queen of Swords · Judgement · Page of Swords · The Star

The Ace of Swords keeps the words that needed to be spoken to the end. The Queen of Swords knows exactly what the truth was. Judgement wants it to be heard and weighed again. The Page of Swords carries the message through time, and the Star shows that this truth has a place in your future. What stayed unfinished was your own version of what happened. In that story other people decided what the truth was, what kind of person you were and how the conflict should be told. You lost the chance to finish your words. That is why it can affect you so strongly today when someone speaks for you, ascribes motives to you or presents your words in a way you do not recognise. The soul remembers the very unpleasant sensation of reading its own story written by somebody else.

10 · How it carried over

Five of Swords · Nine of Swords · Two of Swords · Seven of Swords · Knight of Swords

The Five of Swords expects a clash. The Nine of Swords lives through the possible consequences in advance. The Two of Swords stops the words at the last moment. The Seven of Swords chooses carefully what will be said and what will stay hidden. The Knight of Swords describes the other possibility — when the pressure gets too strong, the words come out fast and sharp. In your present life you can spend a long time thinking through a conversation in which you have to defend your position. You picture the reactions, prepare arguments and decide how much exactly it is wise to say. When it builds up, though, the Knight of Swords can open the door all at once, and then all the pre-edited versions come out in one rather impressive package. In the coming period you will see this pattern especially clearly in a conversation with someone who has authority. This time you will have the chance to say the important thing before the tension has accumulated a biography of its own.

11 · What life is already asking you to stop repeating

Four of Swords · The Hermit · Two of Swords · The Hanged Man · Six of Swords

The Four of Swords shows the silence after tension. The Hermit withdraws and carries on the conversation only inside his own head. The Two of Swords postpones the decision. The Hanged Man holds the situation for a long time, and the Six of Swords finally moves away from it. It is exactly this script that is due to be interrupted. There will be a conversation after which your first impulse may be to withdraw and let time do the work. The cards give a different development: you will have a second chance to return to the subject and say what was left unsaid. If you use that chance, a very old pattern starts losing its power. Important words have a peculiar habit — when you leave them for “some day”, they usually find a rather inconvenient moment on their own.

12 · What you can do differently

The Magician · Ace of Swords · Queen of Swords · The Chariot · Six of Wands

The Magician puts the voice back into your own hands. The Ace of Swords wants a precise formulation. The Queen of Swords gives a clear position and well-chosen words. The Chariot adds action right after what was said. The Six of Wands shows that expressing yourself can bring recognition, support and a stronger public position. In the coming months an opportunity will appear to state an idea, an opinion or a decision in front of people whose view carries weight for you. This time the strongest strategy is the simple one: you say what you think, you explain why, and you let your words be heard. Phrases like “I'm convinced of this”, “I'm ready to defend this position”, “I'm the person who makes this decision for myself” will carry particular force. After that conversation you will notice that the authority opposite already looks considerably more human. Most authorities have that annoying habit once you look at them closely.

13 · If there were no karma

The Sun · Six of Wands · The World · Ace of Wands · The Star

The Sun is visibility without fear. The Six of Wands brings recognition for your words, your knowledge or your work. The World widens the audience and can connect your voice with more people, another setting, the internet, publishing, teaching or public work. The Ace of Wands brings a new idea that will want to be expressed. The Star shows influence that grows naturally once you allow yourself to be recognisable.

The prediction of the last position is strong: a period is coming in which you can be more visible, more heard and more recognisable than you have been so far. You may start a project, step in front of an audience, write, teach, present an idea, or simply begin speaking more freely in your own circle. People will start associating your name with a particular position, a body of knowledge or a way of expressing things. The less you edit yourself according to the expected reaction, the more clearly what you actually carry will show.

The thread of the voice begins at the moment when you once understood that words can cost you a place, a position and a sense of safety. That is why one piece of criticism today can carry far more weight than it deserves. Ahead of you, though, is a different story. A situation will come in which a person with authority questions your position, and this time you will stay in the conversation. You will say what you think, you will say it in good time, and you will see that the world keeps turning. From that moment on the old “it's dangerous to be heard” will gradually give way to a far more accurate sentence: “I'm a person with something to say.”

In the Game of the SoulThe voice is a gift and it wants its place. To see what you came into this world with, go into Gifts.

4 · The thread of safety

Your thread is connected with safety, with home and with the sense that before a big change you have to have checked every possible consequence. When life opens a door to another place, a new job, a financial opportunity or an entirely different way of living, your first thought is rarely just “Do I want it?” Almost immediately after it arrive the costs, the risks, the deadlines, the fallback plan and the question of what happens if in six months everything looks different. The cards go back to an early change, then to a much older loss of home and property, and in the future they show a moment when you will have to choose whether safety will be the place you guard or your ability to build a new foundation anywhere.

1 · The trigger

The Wheel of Fortune · Ace of Pentacles · Eight of Wands · Three of Wands · The Fool

The Wheel of Fortune shows a change that will appear fairly soon and will open an option you have already thought about or secretly hoped for. The Ace of Pentacles brings a concrete possibility — money, a new job, a deal, a property, an offer or a chance to build a material base somewhere else. The Eight of Wands speeds up events and suggests you will not have endless time to decide. The Three of Wands turns your gaze towards another place, another city, another country or a life outside the present frame. The Fool opens a door to something that does not yet come with every guarantee. That is exactly how the thread will be activated: you will get a chance that both attracts you and makes you start calculating. You may see a property, receive an offer, have work appear or an idea about moving. In the first moment you will feel excitement. Shortly after, your inner finance department will call an extraordinary meeting with appendices, spreadsheets and a reserve budget for a scenario that will probably never happen.

2 · The reaction

Two of Pentacles · Seven of Pentacles · Four of Pentacles · King of Swords · Nine of Pentacles

The Two of Pentacles starts the comparison: what costs more, what brings more, what you lose, what you gain, how long you can hold out if the income changes for a while. The Seven of Pentacles makes you calculate the result over time. The Four of Pentacles wants to keep what you have. The King of Swords switches on the logic and looks for precise facts, contracts, terms and figures. The Nine of Pentacles raises an important question: will you keep your own independence? In a situation like this you will research a great deal. You will compare neighbourhoods, prices, incomes, expenses, transport, taxes, opportunities and probably the climate, if the conversation goes on long enough. That in itself is useful. The risk comes when the search for information starts chasing an absolute guarantee. Life offers that guarantee roughly as often as a good property with a beautiful view, a low price and no neighbours.

3 · The first scene

Six of Swords · Six of Cups · Five of Pentacles · Four of Wands · Page of Pentacles

The Six of Swords goes back to an early move or a period when the familiar surroundings changed. The Six of Cups places the scene in the childhood years. The Four of Wands shows a home, a family house or a place you took as a secure part of your life. The Five of Pentacles brings a sense of lost stability, financial worry or a period in which the adults around you were uncertain what came next. The Page of Pentacles describes the child observing the practical side of the change. There may have been a move, a change of housing, a divorce, a loss of income, a family crisis or a period when you felt that home is not a permanent given. The adults were probably talking about money, work, expenses or the future, and you absorbed far more than they assumed. Since then, at every big change you check the foundation first. You have to know where you will live, what it will cost and what you will do if plan A suddenly decides to become plan Z.

4 · What you understood then

Four of Pentacles · The Emperor · King of Pentacles · Nine of Wands · Ace of Pentacles

The Four of Pentacles preserved the first rule: “When I have a secure foundation, I'm protected.” The Emperor adds the need for control and clear structure. The King of Pentacles links stability with material resource. The Nine of Wands keeps the readiness for the next change, and the Ace of Pentacles shows how important a real, visible support is to you. Over time you developed a strong sense for risk. You want to have a reserve, property, means, a plan and the ability to manage alone. Those qualities have often helped you. Along with them, though, came the belief that a big choice should only be made once every unknown has been removed. It is exactly that part which is about to be tested. An opportunity will appear where the foundation is good, the outlook is good, and one part of the future still remains unknown.

5 · Why this is not the whole explanation

The Star · Three of Wands · The Moon · The Wheel of Fortune · The High Priestess

The Star shows that alongside the fear of change you carry a strong longing for another life. The Three of Wands has been looking at a distant horizon for a long time. The Moon keeps the doubts and all the scenarios that can appear at night with remarkably good direction. The Wheel of Fortune returns the same theme across different periods. The High Priestess suggests that part of that longing and part of that fear have a deeper origin. So you can spend years interested in another place, another country, another home or a different way of living, and at the same time keep finding one more reason to postpone the decision. The wish is real. The fear is real too. That combination is exactly the sign that the thread continues far back — to a story in which one change cost almost everything material you had.

6 · The scene behind the memory

Five of Pentacles · The Tower · Ten of Pentacles · Six of Swords · Five of Cups

The Five of Pentacles opens a picture of material loss. The Tower shows a sudden event that destroys the former security. The Ten of Pentacles links what happened to a home, family property, land or an inheritance. The Six of Swords brings a forced departure. The Five of Cups keeps the pain over what is left behind. The scene may be connected with a war, a social upheaval, confiscation, a fire, a financial catastrophe, the loss of family property or a forced resettlement. There was a place you took as your own, and in a fairly short period you lost access to it. The family may have set out with few means and the hope of returning one day. In that story the change was no adventure. It came as the loss of the foundation on which your whole life had been built.

7 · Who you were

Queen of Pentacles · The Empress · Ten of Pentacles · Four of Wands · Nine of Pentacles

The Queen of Pentacles shows a person who looks after the home and the material stability of the family. The Empress adds land, property, fertility and the ability to create abundance. The Ten of Pentacles speaks of family property and inheritance. The Four of Wands shows a home that mattered greatly, and the Nine of Pentacles suggests personal independence and a good material standard. You probably managed the home, the land or the family means and were strongly bound to the place you had created. You knew what you had, what needed to be preserved and how the safety of the people around you was maintained. Home was part of your identity. You could say: “I'm the person who built this.” That is why the loss afterwards affected far more than the property. With it disappeared part of the picture of who you were and where you belonged.

8 · How it ended

Death · The Tower · Eight of Cups · Ten of Swords · The Fool

Death shows an ending after which the old way of life can no longer be restored in its previous form. The Tower speeds up the change. The Eight of Cups shows the leaving of the familiar place. The Ten of Swords brings the finality of what happened. The Fool begins a new life with very few certain bearings. You left. You probably carried only part of what had once been your life. After that a new period began in another place, in another setting or under entirely different conditions. It is exactly that transition which left the strong conviction that change can take away more than it promises. Since then one part of you prefers to guarantee the house, the income, the reserve income and probably the reserve reserve before closing the front door.

9 · What was left unfinished

Ten of Pentacles · Four of Wands · Ace of Pentacles · The Emperor · The World

The Ten of Pentacles shows the need for a lasting foundation. The Four of Wands wants a place of your own that feels yours. The Ace of Pentacles brings the restoration of material stability. The Emperor builds a structure that can hold over time. The World adds a curious detail: that stability can be created far from the place you already know. A strong need has stayed in you to say one day: “I'm at home and this won't be taken from me easily.” That is why property, your own means, a financial reserve and independence matter so much. The change ahead will show you that you can keep that foundation while moving too. Safety will gradually stop being one particular address. It will become the knowledge that you can create a home again.

10 · How it carried over

Seven of Cups · Nine of Swords · Two of Swords · Seven of Pentacles · King of Pentacles

The Seven of Cups creates a multitude of possible scenarios. The Nine of Swords picks a few of the most unpleasant and examines them in detail. The Two of Swords slows the decision, because the information never seems sufficient. The Seven of Pentacles asks whether the choice will pay off years from now. The King of Pentacles wants financial durability and a demonstrable result. This is why, facing a big choice, you can examine dozens of options and find at least one potential weakness in each. One is expensive, another is far away, the third has poor transport, the fourth has excellent transport but a questionable bathroom. Your mind is trying to protect the future by playing it through in advance. During the next big opportunity you will feel the moment when useful analysis starts turning into postponement. That is exactly when the decision will already be ripe.

11 · What life is already asking you to stop repeating

Two of Wands · The Hanged Man · Seven of Pentacles · Four of Swords · Three of Wands

The Two of Wands looks towards another life and keeps the map in hand. The Hanged Man stretches out the period between the wish and the action. The Seven of Pentacles waits for more proof. The Four of Swords leaves the decision for a later moment. The Three of Wands goes on showing the horizon that draws you. The prediction is very concrete: an option will appear that is good enough to be chosen. There will also be a few unknowns that cannot be settled in advance. That is exactly where the old threshold will be. You may tell yourself again that after another six months, a little more saving or one more round of research you will be ready. The cards show that this time the moment to decide will come earlier. At some point Google has nothing new to tell you. That is also a sign from fate, if a rather prosaic one.

12 · What you can do differently

The Chariot · Ace of Swords · Three of Wands · Ace of Pentacles · The Emperor

The Chariot requires a chosen direction. The Ace of Swords separates the facts from the fears. The Three of Wands sets the concrete goal. The Ace of Pentacles wants a real material base, and the Emperor creates the structure that will support you after the change. It will help you to define in advance which conditions are non-negotiable for you: a financial reserve, an income, housing, documents, a timeframe and a plan for the first months. Once those conditions are met, movement follows. The phrase that changes the thread is simple: “I'm prepared enough to begin.” That word — enough — will matter a great deal. It frees the choice from the task of predicting every future Tuesday until 2034.

13 · If there were no karma

The World · The Fool · Nine of Pentacles · The Star · Four of Wands

The World shows a widening of life and strongly supports another place, a move abroad, a new setting or the completion of a big life stage. The Fool gives the courage to begin. The Nine of Pentacles preserves financial and personal independence. The Star brings back the dream that has long waited for the right moment. The Four of Wands shows a new home and the sense that you have found a place where you can stay.

That is why the last position is strongly predictive. Ahead of you lies a period in which a change of setting can become real. It may be a move, the purchase or rental of a new home, life in another city or country, work with more freedom, or a decision that considerably widens your everyday life. The first months will demand adjustment and practical decisions, but the cards give a good material base after the transition. Especially strong is the combination of the World, the Nine of Pentacles and the Four of Wands — it speaks of a person who steps out of the familiar frame and afterwards creates a place of their own that holds.

The thread of safety begins in an old memory in which change came together with loss. That is why today you can experience every big departure as though you must inevitably leave something precious behind for good. The next important change will show you a different script. You will have the chance to keep your resources, plan sensibly and set out at the same time. At first there will be a period of doubt, then a concrete decision, and after it movement. And when you look back, the most interesting part will probably be how long you spent asking yourself whether you were ready.

Because the ending of this thread is “I am able to create safety after the change as well.” Home will no longer be only the place you are afraid to lose. It will be the place you can choose and build again.

In the Game of the SoulWhen two directions lie in front of you and you have to choose, go into The Crossroads.

The four threads lead to different themes, yet they all follow the same path. First comes the reaction, then the explanation, and at the end appears the question of where it actually started. That is why the spread is read backwards: from what is happening now to the scene that taught it, and further on to the story in which the same feeling had an entirely different cause.

What all the options share is the moment of recognition. A situation will come in which the old script wants to write the ending in advance. You will feel the familiar tightening, the familiar thought, the familiar “here we go again”. That is exactly where the difference lies between repetition and choice — not later, but in the first minute.

So it is worth remembering your own first signal. For some it is the silence of a person who usually answers quickly. For others, someone else's need that instantly becomes your task. For a third, criticism that weighs too much. For a fourth, an opportunity that turns at once into a list of risks. The signal differs, the mechanism is one.

The old story has a right to be understood. It has no need to be lived again. Today you have more experience, more choices and more freedom than the person who once made the first decision. That is exactly why the thread comes back — so that you can give it a different ending.

And if you want to see which lesson repeats across different people and years, go on into Karma in the Game of the Soul.

✦ An exchange of energy ✦

The universe hears what you give

Everything you do from the heart — a word, an action, a gift — comes back. Not tomorrow, not by the end of the week, but at the moment when enough of it has gathered. If these words have reached you and something in them has recognised something in you, that is no accident.

And if you feel like returning a little of that energy, any amount is received with gratitude and turns into new writing, new spreads, new words that will reach someone who needs them at exactly the right time. That is how the circle keeps turning.

✦ Give with gratitude ✦
