What is it?
The Ouija board was invented by the American lawyer Elijah Bond in the mid-19th century. The new board game quickly became popular among the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie because, besides being entertaining, it helped people understand themselves. During a séance you can formulate any question and receive an answer through the planchette. It is believed that the answers are given by the souls of the dead, spirits, angels and other beings from the other world, which is why they are so accurate, profound and sometimes strange.

The exact origin of the board's name is unclear: according to one version it is a blend of the German and French words for "yes", according to another it comes from the ancient Egyptian word for "luck". Over the years the "witch's talking board" has spread all over the world and is mentioned in books, films and scientific research.

How does it work?
The set for holding a séance consists of two things: a board printed with letters and numbers, and a planchette with a hole in the middle. The session is held in a group of several people (at least two). The participants sit around the board and lightly touch the planchette with their fingertips. One person asks a question and the planchette starts to move – this means the spirits hear you and are answering. After a while a word, letter, number or a sequence of them can be seen through the hole – this is the answer to the question.

Classic rules and tips for a successful session:
Do not hold the session alone, and do not consume alcohol, nicotine or drugs beforehand.
Relax before the session, take off your jewellery, let your hair down, loosen your belt or change into loose clothes. You can light candles, dim the lights and put on quiet music.
Take what is happening seriously and do not ask silly questions.
Communicate with the spirits respectfully. Before asking a question, spiritualists greet the spirits aloud and ask whether they have come. After the session they say goodbye (that is what the "goodbye" inscription on the board is for – you simply move the planchette there).
Treat the information you receive critically – spirits can be wrong too.
