Agate, which is also a form of Chalcedony, is known in many forms. It is a semi-precious stone that is highly colourful and patterned, forming in concentric layers across a wide range of colours and textures. Each individual form of Agate is created as cavities in rock are filled. As a result, it often has a rounded shape with concentric lines, much like the rings of a tree trunk. Since deep antiquity, Agate has been highly valued as a talisman or amulet; it was also used to quench thirst and protect against fevers. There are legends telling that Persian sorcerers used Agate to deflect storms. Agate cups were very popular in the Byzantine Empire. Agate cups were commonplace among European royalty during the Middle Ages, and many museums across Europe hold extraordinary examples.
