The stone's name comes from the Greek words "chysos", meaning golden, and "beryllos", referring to its beryllium content.
Cat's eye contains rutile fibres that create its famous cat's eye effect – a white line, or ray, running through the centre of the stone. When the stone is rotated in the light, this ray appears to glide across its surface. This phenomenon is known as "chatoyancy", from the French "chat" for cat and "oeil" for eye.
Cat's eye is also known as Chrysoberyl. It is a translucent stone with a glassy lustre that has been regarded since ancient times as a protector against disasters, accidents and evil spirits.
