The Traces of Fate — why the Game of the Soul grows more valuable over time

One reading can say a great deal about the day you are in. It can catch the person on your mind, the decision you keep putting off, the change you can already feel, or the question you meant to leave for later, which keeps surfacing anyway between work, the phone and the matter of what to make for dinner.

Some readings we remember for months, because they touched exactly what we were living through at the time. Others fade, because life carries on and brings more conversations, more people, more decisions and dozens more small events. After a few months we usually remember the general feeling, while the details have passed through the private editing suite of our memory, which is remarkably gifted at that sort of work.

And that is exactly why one of the most valuable parts of the Game of the Soul begins to reveal itself with time.

The Traces of Fate keep the path we would otherwise forget. Every move leaves a small mark: the field you landed on, the feeling you chose, the Mirror Question, your answer, the note you left, the task for the day, the symbol, the rune or the I Ching you passed through. One such day can look entirely ordinary. Two months later you have a sequence. Six months later you have a story. A year later you can open your own words and meet someone you know very well, yet have already begun to remember differently — yourself, months ago.

Play it for real and in time you will have something valuable

This is why I want to say it from the start: if you enter the Game of the Soul, play it regularly. Come in every day when you can, make your move, choose the feeling honestly and answer the questions. Leave notes too, however short. There is no need to write a philosophical treatise on a Wednesday morning. „Thinking about the same person again“ is an excellent note. „I think I know what I want now“ works just as well. „That question annoyed me“ may turn out, four months later, to be far more interesting than half a page of elegant explanation. Right now these sentences look small, and yet they are precisely what preserves the real person you were on that particular day.

Imagine that in March you wrote: „I will wait a little longer, there must be a reason he is acting this way.“ In April: „I am getting tired of waiting.“ By May: „Maybe the question is why I am still in this.“ And in June: „Actually, I no longer want this relationship.“ Relying on memory alone, you may end up feeling that the decision arrived out of nowhere. The Traces will show you the whole road to it. You will see when you first sensed the change, when you began to name it and when you were finally ready to do something different.

The same can happen with work. At first you ask whether the promotion will come, then you start speaking about how your effort is treated, in time the subject of price appears, and later still you begin to think about a direction of your own. Taken one by one, each question belongs to its own day. Seen together across months, they turn into development. And that picture is the valuable part.

The rooms are wonderful, and the Game gathers time

FatedWays has many rooms and I love them precisely because each has its own way of helping you look at a situation. You can step into Tarot, Runes, the I Ching, Karma, Love, the Lineage, Letting Go, the Crossroads, the Celestial Teacher and the other spaces, and receive a view of a particular question or period. On one day you want Tarot, on another you are curious what the I Ching will say, and on a third you feel like looking towards your lineage, your relationship, the sky or your own direction. These rooms give a great deal, and that is why they are part of the whole experience.

The Game of the Soul adds something that grows more interesting with time — it gathers the separate days. After one move you have an experience for that day. After ten, repetitions can start to appear. After fifty, a direction begins to show. After a few months you can compare the person you were at the beginning with the person asking the questions now. This value accumulates gradually, and that is exactly why regularity matters. If you came in only when life decided to occupy you with a love saga, you will have an excellent chronicle of the love saga. Play on ordinary days as well and you will have a far fuller picture of yourself.

The Trace — what keeps returning in your life now

The Trace begins to form from the third move and works with your last twelve steps. It refreshes every day and with every new move, which keeps it close to what you are living through in the present period. The fields may differ and so may the questions, while one shared theme often begins to run through them.

Say that over two weeks you landed on questions about work, love, family and money. At work you are waiting for someone to value your effort. In love you are waiting for the other person to make a move. In the family you are waiting for someone to finally understand what weighs on you. With money you are waiting for the right moment to name your price. Four different areas, and the Trace can notice one and the same movement: you are waiting for the other person to take the first step. That alone changes how you look at all four situations.

Another time it may turn out that the word „should“ keeps returning in your notes. I should help. I should wait. I should be understanding. I should finish a little more. I should disappoint no one. By the fifth „should“ you begin to suspect that this word has settled rather comfortably into your life and it may be time to ask it for rent.

Such repetitions look minor in daily life. Seen together, they begin to say far more.

The Thread — how you change across the whole path

The Thread unlocks at the fiftieth move and is rewritten every ten after that. It looks at the whole accumulated path — the fields, the symbols, the runes, the I Ching and the way you moved through them. This is the moment you begin to see the larger arc.

You may read your first question and smile, because the person or the situation that took up half your world back then hardly matters today. That is very good evidence of change, since in daily life we rarely notice how much we have left behind. You may also discover that fifty moves on you are still circling a similar theme, however more elegant the wording has become. At the start you asked: „Will he write?“ Then: „What does he actually feel?“ Later still: „Why is this relationship going nowhere?“ And somewhere along the way you may realise that you have spent half a year analysing a man who managed to produce three messages and one „we shall see“. That is valuable information too.

The Thread shows where you have moved, what you have outgrown, which questions have fallen away and which still ask for attention. Given enough time it becomes a deeply personal account of your movement.

How the question changed

This section appears from the second question onwards and is one of the most interesting to me, because language often gives away the change long before we have fully realised it. At the start you might ask: „Will he come back?“ In time the question becomes: „Why am I waiting?“ Then: „What do I actually want from a relationship?“ With money you may begin at „Will I have more?“, pass through „Why is it hard for me to ask for more?“ and in time arrive at „Why do I feel I have to explain the value of my work?“

The question itself begins to show how your relationship to the situation is shifting. At one point the centre is the event or the other person, and later you begin to see your own decisions, wishes and limits. This change usually happens slowly, which is why we rarely catch it in motion. When the questions are kept one after another, it becomes very clear.

What you did not notice

„What you did not notice“ unlocks at twelve steps within the last three months and looks for links between moments separated by enough time that you cannot keep them in mind at once. In May you may have had trouble at work and the theme was the limit. In June the same feeling appeared in the family. In August it returned in the relationship. The people differ and so do the situations, and every time you said nothing, waited far too long or hoped the other person would understand on their own.

When these situations sit months apart, we easily take them for separate stories. The Traces can show the shared mechanism. Life is rather inventive as well — if a theme still has business with us, it will happily change the lead, the set and the date and appear all over again. In time you begin to recognise the plot before the second season.

The Mirror Chronicle — your own words across time

The Mirror Chronicle keeps your answers to the Mirror Questions and with time it can become one of the most valuable parts of the whole experience. Imagine playing almost every day for a year. You will have hundreds of small traces of how you thought in different periods — when you were in love, angry, confident, exhausted, anxious, resolute, or certain that this particular case was the exception to everything you know about yourself.

You will be able to read what you wrote two months before an important decision. How you spoke about someone who is now far from your life. How you described a job you later left. What you felt before a period that turned out to be the start of a large change. This is a personal archive few people have, because even when we keep a diary we rarely record the same inner themes so consistently.

You can return to old answers and add to them. So a question you answered in February with „I still do not know“ may receive a very different answer in August. The difference between those two sentences already shows how far you have come.

The Letter from your future self

The Letter arrives at a threshold — fifty moves, six months or one year in the game. It speaks from the point of view of the version of you that is already beyond the period you are passing through now. That distance matters, because the present person is living everything up close. A problem can look enormous, a separation endless, a change like a decision for a whole lifetime. In time the scale is often different.

Today you may be certain you will not survive the end of a relationship, and a year later wonder why you gave so much attention to someone who could answer messages only on a Thursday after half past ten. There may also be a decision that looks minor today and turns out to be the very turn from which many other changes started. The Letter gathers that more distant view and returns it to the period you were living through.

Why I would recommend playing every day

If you are part of FatedWays, use the rooms, because they are wonderful and each has its own character. Step into Tarot, Runes, the I Ching, Karma, Love, the Lineage, Letting Go, the Crossroads, the Celestial Teacher and the other spaces whenever you have a question or simply want to see your day from another angle. Alongside that, give a few minutes to the Game of the Soul, because its value grows with every day that passes.

Regularity matters especially. Come in every day if you can. Even without a large question, come in. Even if the day looks ordinary, make the move. Even if it feels as though you wrote almost the same thing yesterday, answer again. In time the repetition itself may turn out to be the most important part of the story. If you return to one theme for three months running, that already means something. If one word appears in ten notes, it deserves attention. If the question has gradually changed, you will be able to see when that began.

After a month you will have your first patterns. After a few months you will be able to compare periods. After a year you will have a personal archive showing what happened to you and how you thought, felt, chose and slowly changed.

That is why I consider the Traces so valuable. They grow richer along with you.

What depends on you

The Traces work with the material you give them, so honesty matters more than a beautiful answer. Choose the feeling you actually have. If it is boredom, choose boredom. If it is anger, choose anger. If the question irritated you, you are welcome to write that. Your future self has no need to be impressed by your literary talent. It will be far more interested to learn what you really thought on that Tuesday in March.

Leave notes, even when you have only one sentence. „Put the conversation off again.“ „Today I do not care.“ „I think I am ready.“ „Strange, this time the question did not touch me.“ In time these short lines can tell you a great deal, because they were written before you knew what would come next.

How to begin

The Memory of the Soul is part of the Sanctuary of the Guardians and is included in the subscription. Access begins during the seven free days, and no bank card is required to start. The first Trace appears from the third move, the Mirror Chronicle begins to grow with your answers, „How the question changed“ starts from your second question, „What you did not notice“ unlocks at twelve steps within three months, and the Thread arrives at the fiftieth move and refreshes every ten after that.

To begin you need one question that is alive for you today, a number from one to six and the first move. Come back tomorrow. Then again. Let the Game accumulate your days and give it your own words, because in time the most valuable part will be born from exactly those.

After a few months you will be able to open the Traces and read what you were waiting for, what you were afraid of, what you had begun to understand, which questions have changed and when you took the first small step towards something different. After a year you will have part of your life gathered in a way that is usually lost.

And then you will understand why it is worth coming in every day.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Traces of Fate?

The Traces of Fate are the memory of the Game of the Soul. They gather your moves, questions, feelings, answers and notes, and gradually begin to show the recurring themes, the change in the way you think and the links between different periods.

How many moves are needed?

The first Trace appears from the third move. „How the question changed“ starts from your second question, „What you did not notice“ unlocks at twelve steps within three months, the Thread arrives at the fiftieth move, and the Mirror Chronicle grows with every answer you give.

Why is it good to play regularly?

Because the value of the Traces comes from accumulation. The more consistently you play and answer, the fuller your personal history becomes and the more links can appear between separate periods.

What happens if I miss a day?

You continue the next one. Everything gathered stays in your profile. If you can, play every day, because regular moves give a much richer picture over time.

Do I need to write long answers?

One honest sentence is quite enough. In time the short answer written on the day itself is often far more valuable than a long explanation composed months later.

What is the difference between the rooms and the Game of the Soul?

The rooms let you examine particular questions through the different spaces of FatedWays. The Game of the Soul gathers your steps across time and gradually builds a personal chronicle of your questions, reactions and development.

Are my records kept if I change my phone or computer?

Yes. The records are tied to your profile and you can see them from any device you sign in on.

Who sees my answers?

The Mirror Chronicle is a private part of your profile.

Do I need a subscription?

The Memory of the Soul is part of the Sanctuary of the Guardians. The seven free days include access to it and you can start without a bank card.
