Some meetings seem to start halfway through the conversation. You are seeing each other for the first time, and an hour later you have already skipped past the weather, the job, the favourite films and all those questions people usually use to get acquainted. On the second date you tell him something your friends of many years do not know, and he looks at you in a way that makes you wonder whether this really is the first time. Everything moves quickly and somehow naturally. The words come on their own, so does the closeness, and there is a familiarity about him that you would struggle to explain. Two weeks in, you already know how you each spent your childhood, what hurt you in your previous relationships and what you are afraid of. If the pace keeps up a little longer, by the end of the month the only thing left will be to decide where you are spending Christmas, even though the calendar says April.
And just as you are telling yourself that you have finally met someone with whom everything is easy, the rhythm changes. Last night you talked until two in the morning; today a single „Fine.“ arrives, with a full stop. On an ordinary day that is one word and one punctuation mark. After that much closeness it can turn into a two-hour phone call with a friend, including an analysis of the full stop, the time it was sent, and the fact that three days ago he used an exclamation mark.
Then come the approach and the distance, the promise and the silence, the return and the fresh start. Months go by, for some people years, until the question „Why him?“ slowly gives way to another one: „Why is this story so familiar to me?“
That is where the real conversation about karmic relationships begins.
The strongest feeling in a meeting like this is often familiarity. The man has no history in your life yet, and his presence already carries weight. His voice, his gaze, the way he comes closer or pulls back set off a reaction that looks far bigger than the time you have spent together.
The spiritual view links this to a shared history between two souls. Something is left over — an experience, a choice, a promise or a lesson that is looking for its place again. That is why closeness can outrun logic. The soul has already recognised him, while the mind is still gathering information and trying to work out whether he is at least in the habit of answering messages within the same calendar week.
There is a perfectly human side to it as well. We are surprisingly good at recognising whatever we grew up with, even after years of promising ourselves we would never repeat it.
Picture a girl whose father was very loving when he was there, but who was often away, and it was never clear when he would have time for her. When he is present, she is his little girl. When he is gone, she waits. Twenty years later she meets a man who is wonderful when he is close and who can then disappear for a few days. She feels an enormous connection with him. And there is a reason — she has known that feeling for a long time.
Another person grew up with a mother whose approval had to be earned. A good mark, the right behaviour, a little more effort. As an adult he falls in love with a woman in front of whom he once again has to prove how good, how interesting and how valuable he is. He sincerely believes he is fighting for his love. The old task has simply turned up wearing a new face.
So when the recognition is very strong, the question worth asking is this: „When have I felt this way before?“ The answer often contains a parent, a first love, an old marriage or someone you waited for far too long.
When a feeling is enormous, we naturally give it enormous meaning. You think about him in the morning, while you work, in the evening, at the shop, and once more while you are supposedly watching a film. From there it is a short step to the thought: „If I have never felt this way before, then he must be the one.“
Strong attraction really does say something important. It shows that this person has touched a deep place in you. In that place there may be love, an old absence, a fear of being left, a need for recognition, a familiar family pattern, or several of these at once.
A shared life, however, also calls for far more down-to-earth qualities. How do you talk to each other when you are angry? Do you want similar things? Can you make plans? Does one of you see a future together while the other has spent three months explaining that he „is not into labels“? And above all — is he there on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, when there is no lovely dinner, no new dress and no three-hour conversation under the stars?
You can have incredible chemistry with a man who on Monday says he has never met a woman like you, on Wednesday needs to be alone, and on Sunday wonders sincerely how you could have decided that his feelings had changed. The attraction is entirely real. So is the confusion.
That is why a secure relationship can, at the beginning, look almost suspiciously ordinary to someone used to love arriving with a wait attached. The new partner calls when he said he would. He turns up when you agreed. If something is bothering him, he says so. A month in comes the strange thought: „This is lovely, but where are the butterflies?“
The butterflies may simply have been given a day off.
When love has been tied to uncertainty for years, security first has to become familiar before you can start feeling it as closeness.
While you are inside a relationship, every event has its own explanation. He pulled back because things are hard at work. He came back because he realised what he feels. He disappeared again because he is afraid of closeness. Next month a new explanation turns up.
From the outside the picture is often a good deal simpler.
There is an intense stretch of closeness. Then distance arrives. You start thinking more than you live. You reread the conversations, go back over the last date, remember exactly what you said five days ago, and at some point you have a theory according to which the whole thing went wrong because of one remark somewhere around dessert.
Then he comes back.
The relief is so strong that the old questions quickly lose their weight. There is a new conversation, a new promise, a new beginning. In time everything sets off along the familiar route.
One such stretch can simply be a hard patch in a relationship. It gets more interesting when the same plot starts arriving with different people.
Five years ago you waited for someone to decide whether he wanted a relationship. The next partner was entirely different, and you waited again. The third has a different job, a different age and a different character, and his closing line bears a suspicious resemblance to the first one's: „I love you very much, but right now I cannot give you what you want.“
After the third „right now“ a person is entitled to suspect that life is repeating the material, because the first two editions were evidently left unread.
That is when the question „Why do I keep meeting people like this?“ starts turning into „What makes me stay inside this script?“
The answer may be fear of being alone, hope that he will change, a need to be chosen, or the old belief that if you try hard enough, love will finally become safe. Once you see your own part in it, you have the chance to do something different.
All three can begin with enormous attraction and a sense of recognition. The real difference shows up later, once the first magic has passed and life has started interfering with its Mondays, its bills, its work and its bad moods.
Beside one kind of person you gradually become more yourself. You have a relationship, and you also have your own life. You see your friends, you work, you take an interest in the world, you have ideas and desires. There are conflicts, because two people with no conflicts at all are either saints or one of them has yet to notice he is in a relationship. After the difficult conversation, though, you can find your way back to each other and carry on.
That is how many people experience meeting a soulmate — there is strong recognition and enough room for each of them to stay themselves.
In a karmic story, one sensitive spot gets touched again and again. If your theme is abandonment, there will be waiting. If it is your own worth, life will steer you into situations where you have to choose whether you will defend it. If you are used to rescuing everyone around you, there is a good chance you will meet someone offering a rich and long-term rescue programme.
Karmic relationships teach insistently. If the material goes unlearned, life has the unpleasant habit of sending it again with a new name and a new profile picture.
A strong infatuation can be far simpler. You have met someone you fancy enormously. There is chemistry, sexual attraction, novelty, good timing and enough imagination to write half the future before the third date. That can be beautiful too. Not every great passion is under an obligation to sort out past lives.
It is more useful to look at how you live between the dates. Do you still want your own life, or is it slowly turning around a single phone? When he goes quiet, do you carry on with your day, or does an investigation begin that would impress a serious crime unit? Do you speak freely about what you want, or do you weigh every word so as not to frighten him off?
It is precisely these small details that usually say the most.
Synastry contains contacts that help explain why one person enters our life so forcefully and why meeting him carries a different weight from many other meetings.
The lunar nodes are one of the first places worth looking. When one person's Rahu or Ketu makes a strong contact with the other's Sun, Moon, Venus or Mars, the meeting often arrives with that instant recognition. He may open up a direction you have long been walking towards without noticing, or wake an old pattern so strongly that he feels familiar straight away.
One woman, for instance, meets a man and within a few months starts thinking about a new city, a different job or a life she had never pictured before. He seems to have opened a door she had been walking past for years. In another couple, the same nodal contact can bring back the old theme of waiting — one of them chases the closeness again, while the other decides how close he will be allowed.
Saturn has an entirely different character. It has to do with time, responsibility and bonds that are hard to forget. Two people may have been apart for years and one of them still feels a duty towards the other. In a long union Saturn can give staying power and the ability to get through hard years. In another story the same weight has someone asking one day why he is carrying the relationship almost alone.
Pluto goes deeper. Strong contacts bring enormous attraction, jealousy, fear of loss, the wish to know everything about the other person and a struggle for control. After a relationship like that a person rarely sees himself the same way, because it brings to the surface feelings that had been neatly put away.
The twelfth house carries a finer story. Between two people there can be a secret, idealisation, feelings never spoken aloud, or a love that develops far more successfully in the mind than in the calendar. In the inner world you have already lived through a whole history; in the real one you still cannot arrange a simple dinner.
The point of these astrological contacts is to help you see why this particular person pressed this particular button in you. What you do with what you have seen is then your own choice.
People can be remarkably inventive when they badly want a love story to carry a higher meaning.
„We have a strong karmic connection“ sounds a great deal more impressive than „He disappears for ten days and then writes at 1:47 in the morning.“
Some very intense relationships feed on exactly this alternation of closeness and distance. He is warm, attentive and loving, and then he vanishes. When he returns, the relief is enormous. In time you find yourself waiting for the next good stretch, hoping that this one will last a little longer.
Psychology calls this intermittent reinforcement. The same principle runs the slot machines — the payout comes at unpredictable intervals and people keep trying. In love the coin is a message, a phone call, a promise, or one more „I was thinking about you“.
The spiritual meaning of a meeting can matter. It helps to have a very down-to-earth question standing next to it: „What is actually happening between us?“
If the relationship is helping you see an old pattern of your own, the karmic view can open a genuinely important subject. Where there is humiliation, threats, control over your money, isolation from the people close to you or physical violence, the priority is already safety and professional help. A spiritual explanation has no business making bearable a life in which someone is losing herself.
Many people wait for the other one to make the last move. To apologise. To admit what he feels. To explain why he behaved that way. To come back changed enough to make it clear that all those years had a point.
He may do it. He may also carry on with his life with the same habits and an entirely different account of your shared history.
The change begins when his answer stops deciding what you are going to do.
You hear it for the fourth time: „Right now I cannot give you the relationship you want.“ Before, you mostly heard „right now“ and waited for that moment to be over. This time you hear the whole sentence.
Or he disappears and a month later sends „I miss you“. Before, those three words were enough to start again from the beginning. Now your first thought is: „All right. And what do you want to do about it?“
The difference looks small, and it changes the entire conversation.
The karmic circle weakens when you stop playing your old part in it. The one who waits stops waiting. The rescuer lets the other man carry his own responsibility. The one who always keeps quiet starts saying what she wants. And the one who spent years collecting crumbs and turning them into dinner for two finally looks at what is actually on the plate.
It is exactly at such a moment that the old figure may reappear. Life has a peculiar sense of timing.
The phone lights up with the familiar name. The message is almost the same. Only the person reading it is different now.
And then a story can end without a big scene. There is simply nothing left to repeat.
If the same love plot keeps returning through different people, start with Karma. There you can look deeper into the repetition itself — what pattern you carry, where it comes from, and which old role of yours keeps bringing it back.
If you want to look at two particular people — why the attraction is so strong, where you meet easily, where you miss each other and what binds you together — go on to Compatibility.
If you have one specific question about love that gives you no peace — where the relationship is heading, what is happening with him, and what matters to see right now — you can step into Love.
If you can already see that the people change while the script keeps its lines, read Why does the same thing keep happening to you as well.
And if the relationship is over while your thoughts still live at the old address, go on to How to get over someone when time alone will not do it.
We call a relationship karmic when it holds strong recognition and a theme that keeps coming back. For one person that is the waiting, for another the fear of being left, for a third the need to prove her worth over and over. The most interesting question is what this relationship is repeating in your life and why you see it so clearly with this particular person.
Look at the whole story. The fast closeness, the sense of having known him for a long time, the breakups and the returns, and the repetition of one and the same painful theme give a much clearer picture when they turn up together.
Yes. When two people see the old pattern and start acting differently, the relationship can take on an entirely different shape. If one of them carries on along the old route while the other tries to change everything single-handedly, the story becomes considerably harder.
A person can matter greatly in your life for different reasons. It is more useful to look at what your own life becomes around him. In one kind of relationship you have more freedom to be yourself and to grow. In another, one and the same old sensitive spot keeps asking for attention.
Strong contacts between one person's lunar nodes and the other's personal planets are often linked with a sense of recognition and with the particular importance of the meeting. Such a person may open a new direction in your life, or wake an old pattern so strongly that the relationship is hard to experience as an ordinary acquaintance.
Look at what you do again and again. If you wait for people who are still „not ready“, the theme probably has to do with your choices and your limits. If you rescue your partner in every crisis of his, ask when his problems became more important than your life. If you fall for unavailable people, look at what that distance gives you and what closeness it keeps you safe from. Usually the lesson is visible enough. We have simply lived with it so long that we have started taking it for normal.
Yes, when both people change the way they take part in it. It calls for clear conversations, limits, consistency, and a willingness to leave the old script unplayed rather than run it for another season with the same ending.
Because along with him goes the picture of what might have been. You are letting go of the waiting, the hope, the future you had already built in your mind, and the wish that this time the story would finally end differently. That is why some relationships stay with us a great deal longer than the time we actually spent inside them.
