Whenever Mercury retrograde comes near, the internet turns into that relative who sees you off on a journey: do not sign anything, do not buy a phone, do not start a job, guard your documents, check your ticket three times and, just to be safe, do not move off the sofa. I would leave the sofa alone. Mercury retrograde becomes far more interesting once we stop treating it as three weeks of universal breakdown and start looking at where it passes through our own natal chart and what it brings back for a second reading.
In 2026 Mercury has three retrograde periods. The last cycle is the most interesting of them, because its pre-retrograde shadow begins as early as 4 October and the final exit from it comes on 30 November. Which means the story is longer than the twenty or so days in which Mercury appears to move backwards. Some themes may surface in early October, return for review after the 24th, and receive their final answer only towards the end of November.
All three times Mercury comes back through a water sign, which is to say through the territory of feeling, memory and closeness.
Around every period there is a shadow: the stretch of time in which Mercury crosses the same piece of sky once on the way out, once backwards, and a third time forwards again. For the October cycle the shadow starts on 4 October and clears on 30 November. That is where the feeling comes from that „it began earlier“ — the theme has already arrived, simply without a name yet.
It is no cosmic ban on living. If you have a contract to sign, you sign it after reading it carefully. If your phone has given up the ghost, there is no need for it to wait in a drawer until 13 November out of respect for astrology. And if you are offered good work, the Universe hardly expects you to say: „Thank you, call me back in three weeks, Mercury has other plans.“
The meaning of a retrograde period sits much closer to review, return, repair, a second conversation, a second meeting, rethinking and finishing. And that is exactly why old people, themes and decisions are so often linked with it symbolically. Something we considered closed asks for attention again. Someone may write. An offer may come back. An old project may become current. A conversation cut off months ago may continue from a perfectly innocent „How are you?“, after which you know how it goes — half an evening disappears.
This does not automatically mean that everything coming back has to be taken back. A return simply gives us one more chance to see what has been left unfinished.
From 24 October to 13 November Mercury moves back through Scorpio. In astrology Scorpio is tied to what we keep deepest inside: trust, closeness, secrets, jealousy, fear of loss, shared money, debts, inheritances, control, strong attachments, and experiences we supposedly left behind, about which our memory has a different opinion.
So I would expect this retrograde period to bring out more than forgotten passwords and muddled meeting times. It may bring back a conversation that broke off right before the most important sentence. A person there is still a question for. A financial matter left unfinished. A decision made out of fear. A secret that by now weighs more than the truth. Or an older version of ourselves, asking us to understand why we abandoned her.
For me the most interesting question of this cycle is a simple one: „What is coming back to me because something there is still unfinished?“
A general horoscope can give the period a mood, while your own natal chart says a great deal more. The first thing I would look at is which of your houses holds the degrees from about 5° to 21° Scorpio. That is the part of the chart Mercury will cross forwards, backwards and then forwards again.
If that zone falls in the second house, the story may run through money, self-worth and the way you earn. In the fourth house attention goes to home, family and the past. In the fifth — to love, children, creative work and desire. In the seventh — to partnership and one particular person. In the eighth Scorpio gets almost its own consulting room: shared resources, intimacy, trust, fears and strong emotional bonds. In the tenth house a professional question may return, an old position, or a decision about direction. In the twelfth the theme is usually more inward — a memory, a fear, an unfinished experience, or something we preferred to keep out of sight.
After that I would look at whether Mercury makes a strong aspect to your natal Mercury, Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Ascendant or Medium Coeli. In astrological terms, planets and important points near those degrees in Scorpio, Taurus, Leo and Aquarius are especially sensitive. At that point the retrograde story is already far more personal than „will my parcel be late“.
There are people for whom these weeks work the other way round. Roughly one person in five is born with Mercury retrograde — at the moment of their birth the planet was moving backwards in appearance.
Such a person thinks inward before speaking. The most precise sentence arrives on the way out of the room. They write more clearly than they talk, and they often need a second reading before they accept something as understood. During retrograde periods their thinking clears instead of blurring, and what others call confusion feels to them like coming home.
If this description reads like an autobiography, it is worth checking that particular cell in your chart. It explains a good deal more than three weeks a year.
This is the favourite legend of Mercury retrograde: the ex writes. Yes, an old contact may well appear. Only the appearance itself is no certificate from the Universe that this person is the love of your life and the courier was simply late with the delivery.
Other questions are more interesting. Why does this person appear precisely now? What stayed unsaid? What are we repeating? What would we already do differently? And if we begin again, do we truly begin from a new place, or do we just play the old film from the middle?
The same holds for work, friendship, an idea, a home, a contract and a decision. A return makes sense when it gives us information we did not have before, or the maturity we lacked back then.

From 4 October we can already watch which themes begin to surface. Who is calling? What do your thoughts keep returning to? Which decision are you starting to question? Which conversation do you keep postponing? Which promise to yourself has remained a good intention?
Write these down. After 24 October look at them again. And around 13 November see which of them already carries a different meaning. After 30 November the picture is usually much clearer, because Mercury has passed through the same degrees for the third time.
That is how a retrograde period turns into something far more useful than a calendar of prohibitions. It becomes a way to notice what life is handing us for a second reading.

Three times: from 26 February to 20 March in Pisces, from 29 June to 23 July in Cancer, and from 24 October to 13 November in Scorpio. Each period also has a shadow — for the October one it starts on 4 October and clears on 30 November.
What does the shadow of Mercury retrograde mean?
The time before and after the period, in which Mercury crosses the same piece of sky. A theme often appears in the shadow before the start and receives its final answer in the shadow after the end, when the planet passes through the same degrees for the third time.
Is it true that contracts should not be signed?
People have been signing contracts during these weeks for thousands of years. The sensible thing is to read the terms twice and to ask about whatever looks self-evident. If the deadline depends on another person, waiting is worth it.
Why is the period stronger for some people?
Because of the place in the chart. Mercury returns through the degrees from about 5° to 21° Scorpio, and for each person that zone falls in a different house. Hence the difference: for one it wakes up work, for another the home, for a third the partnership.
