The Game of the Soul

How to stop repeating the same thing in relationships

There is a peculiar moment when a person realises that her story is in fact much longer than she thought. First she remembers the last relationship, then one from years ago, then someone she had almost forgotten, and suddenly she sees something rather uncomfortable: the faces are different, the professions are different, the years too, and the ending is suspiciously alike. One was forever busy, another „not ready yet“, a third had a complicated separation behind him, and you are always the one who waits, understands, gives a little more time and ends up with the question of how you landed in the same place again.

At first this discovery even brings relief. You can see the thread between the events now and you can tell it to a friend in ten minutes with impressive accuracy. You know when you started keeping quiet, why you stayed, what you were excusing and why you will not do the same next time. Then two or three months pass, someone new appears and everything looks different. He has a different character, a different job and even talks in a different way. You tell yourself that this time your choice is obviously an entirely different one. In time he cancels a date, then he has far too much work on, then the important conversation is once again left for another day, and one afternoon you catch yourself writing „no problem“ while inside you the problem already has a name, a surname and office hours.

Then comes the more important discovery: knowing your story and changing it are two different skills.

Why „never again“ usually has a short shelf life

After a painful ending a person is very convincing. „Never again will I wait for a man who does not know what he wants.“ „Never again will I give everything of myself.“ „Next time I will say what I think straight away.“ At the moment you say them, these decisions are entirely sincere. The pain is close, memory still holds every unpleasant sentence and you know perfectly well what you will not allow any more.

Then life returns to its ordinary rhythm, the pain fades and someone appears whom you like very much. The new man, naturally, has nothing in common with the previous one. The previous one hardly ever called, this one writes every day. The previous one had a complicated relationship behind him, this one is free. The previous one said openly that he did not want anything serious, this one explains how much he values closeness. Time passes and it turns out that once again you are the one waiting for the other person to decide when the relationship will have a clear direction.

You can spend years avoiding a certain „type“ and still end up in the same situation, because the repetition is rarely locked inside the other person's looks or character. Before, you waited for a married man. Now you are waiting for a free man who simply needs a bit more time. The promise has been kept to the letter, and the waiting has survived almost untouched.

That is why one small decision at a particular moment does far more work. Instead of promising „never again will I wait“, for instance, you can decide that the next time someone asks for an indefinite amount of time, you will ask what that means for him. A week? A month? Six months? And while he thinks about it, your life will carry on.

This sounds far more prosaic than a lifelong vow, and it is precisely in small decisions like these that the old plot begins to lose its force.

The repetition begins long before the big problem

When a relationship ends, it is easy to point at the big event: the row, the betrayal, the disappearance, the final conversation. Wind the story back, though, and you will often find a great many small moments in which the direction was already visible.

You arrange dinner. He cancels two hours beforehand. You are disappointed, but you answer: „I understand, no problem.“ You even suggest another day so as not to look cross. The next time he is nearly an hour late. You are annoyed, but by the time he arrives the evening has already begun and you decide to keep it pleasant. Later he says something that hurts. The day is otherwise lovely and you tell yourself there is no sense in opening the subject now. A few months on you have a whole archive of unsaid things, while the man across from you may sincerely believe that everything between you has been wonderful.

It is particularly curious how many relationships rest on the automatic „no problem“. No problem that he cancelled again. No problem that he did not call. No problem that he decided for me. No problem that I always travel to you while you still do not know where I live. After the fifth „no problem“ the problem has become rather comfortably furnished.

For someone else the story looks different. She meets a man she likes a great deal. On the first few dates she notices that he talks about himself at length and rarely asks anything. The first time she tells herself he is nervous. The second time she decides he is talkative. A month later she is already shortening her own stories, because she can see when the attention across the table goes out. Six months on she says to a friend: „I have the feeling this man does not know me at all.“

The beginning came much earlier — at the moment she decided that her own account could be a little shorter, so that he would be comfortable.

Who are you in your own recurring story

Very often the people around us change while our own part stays remarkably faithful to the script.

The one who waits always has someone whose moment has not arrived yet. He has to finish an old relationship, get on top of work, get through a divorce, decide what he wants, recover, or simply pass through a complicated period. She shows enormous understanding. A year later she knows his difficult period so well that she could write his biography, while the relationship itself carries on living somewhere in the future.

The one who waits rarely calls it waiting. She gives him time, she does not push, she lets the relationship develop naturally. The difference shows in one very simple question: while he decides what he wants, are you carrying on with your own life? If you turn down plans because „he might call“, if you do not book a trip because „there is no telling what will happen between us“, and if your mood depends on his next step, then waiting has already been given a fairly large room in your life.

The rescuer has a different talent. She finds people in a difficult period remarkably fast. One has trouble at work, another is out of a hard break-up, a third is at odds with his family, a fourth has lost direction and needs someone to believe in him. She listens, she helps, she finds solutions, she sends job adverts, she edits a CV, she reminds him about the doctor, she talks until two in the morning and gradually becomes indispensable.

That feeling is strong, because someone needs you. In time the crisis passes. The man finds work, gets over his ex, sorts out things with his family, and suddenly there is nothing left between the two of them to rescue. That is when the rescuer may note, with some embarrassment, that ordinary closeness is a good deal less familiar to her than a crisis.

With the next man there is once again some sort of complicated period. After the third such partner it is worth looking at whether love is felt most strongly precisely when you are needed.

The one who understands is a magnificent advocate for other people's behaviour. The man has not written for three days, and she has already explained to two friends that he is under terrible pressure at work, that his ex hurt him, that he is afraid of closeness and that his relationship with his mother probably did not help either. The man himself, in that time, has sent a single „I've been really busy“.

She has a wonderful ability to see the reasons behind behaviour. Only, the reason and the result are two different things. You can understand perfectly well why someone disappears and at the same time know that being treated this way is not good for you. You can understand his childhood and still want respect in the present.

The unnoticeable one is incredibly easy to be with. It makes no difference to her where you eat, you can meet whenever it suits the other person, she rarely asks for special attention and does not like to be a burden. At first everyone is charmed by how light she is. In time she starts to feel overlooked, because nobody asks what she wants.

Only, for years she has been answering „I don't mind“.

If a person constantly shows that she has no preferences, the people around her gradually stop looking for them.

The strong one, meanwhile, copes. Always. If there is a problem, she will solve it. If things are hard, she will get through them. If she needs something, she will find a way. Her partner often learns about the crisis only once it is over, and years later the strong woman wonders why the man beside her does not support her more.

It is quite likely that he simply has no idea when she needs support.

All these parts have a history. If you grew up around someone with changeable moods, you may have become very good very early at reading other people. If your place in the family came through being useful, the rescuer was a logical choice. If your wishes created tension, it is natural that you learned to ask for little. The childhood strategy may have been very sensible back then. Years later the same habit can bring you an entirely different result.

What the day you do something different looks like

It is usually the most ordinary of days and nobody plays music at the right moment. He cancels the date for the second time. Before, you would immediately have suggested a new one. Now you answer: „I understand. Write to me when you know when you can.“

Half an hour later the inner conversation begins. I could have suggested Saturday. He might have decided I am offended. What if he does not want to see me at all now? At some point you are almost ready to pick up the phone and write that Sunday is free as well, actually.

On the outside almost nothing has happened. You have simply let the other person do his part for the first time.

After that you get information. If he suggests a day, wonderful. If three weeks go by and he keeps writing sweetly while a date never turns up, you have learned something all the same. Before, it might have taken six months to reach the same conclusion.

In another situation your partner says something that hurts. Usually you keep quiet and in bed that night you hold the magnificent conversation you should have held five hours earlier. This time you say: „That hurt me.“

Then you watch what he does with that information. He may apologise, ask what you heard in his words, explain what he meant. He may get angry and decide that nothing can be said to you any more. Either reaction gives you far more clarity than a whole week of thinking.

It is the same for the rescuer. Someone starts telling her about his latest problem and she already has three solutions, two numbers for him to call and a person she can recommend. This time she only asks: „Do you want advice, or do you just want to talk?“

It may turn out that there was never any request for a rescue operation in the first place.

Why you then start wondering whether you have become a terrible person

When you have kept relationships going in one particular way for a long time, every different piece of behaviour looks suspicious at first. The one who waits asks how much time is needed and immediately feels impatient. The unnoticeable one chooses the restaurant and for a moment wonders whether she has become demanding. The rescuer lets someone solve his own problem and feels mildly guilty. The one who understands says: „I understand the reason, and it is still unpleasant for me“ and then spends half the evening wondering whether she went too far.

The reason is simple. The old behaviour is well rehearsed. You know what follows it and, although you do not like the result, the ground is familiar. The new reaction has no such history and the first few times it feels almost like a borrowed coat.

In time it gets easier. You say what you want without rehearsing the sentence beforehand. You do not offer a third date after two cancelled ones and you do not spend the evening on self-criticism. Someone shares a problem and you listen first, instead of opening the invisible repair shop for other people's lives.

That is how the new gradually starts to look like you.

What happens to the relationship once you stop doing everything the old way

Then relationships become much clearer.

With some couples the other person adapts beautifully. He may be surprised at first, because until now you were giving quite different signals, but he starts to listen more, to ask, to take initiative. For years, say, you arrange every meeting, choose where to go and check when he is free. One day you stop doing it. He notices and starts suggesting things himself. It turns out he had simply got used to the way you had been living so far.

With other relationships the picture is less pleasant. You stop calling first and the phone goes quiet. You stop solving other people's problems and suddenly he does not have all that much to talk to you about. You start saying what you want and irritation comes back across the table.

Picture a woman who spends a whole year arranging every date with one man. She suggests the day, chooses the restaurant, asks when he is free and constantly carries the thread. One day she decides to leave the next meeting to him. A week goes by, then another. He texts her, he is lovely, he sends photos and asks how her day went — only a date never comes.

Until then she was convinced the two of them had an active relationship. In two weeks she finds out who had been creating that activity.

Knowing hurts, and two weeks are considerably cheaper than another two years.

Why in time the old man starts to look wonderful

Memory has an astonishing talent for editing relationships, particularly in the evening after eleven. You open the old chat just to look for something and land on a message from June: „I miss you terribly.“ Below it there is another: „I can't wait to see you.“ Ten minutes later you are deep inside the best stretch of the relationship and starting to wonder whether August was really all that bad.

It was. The archive simply contains June as well.

That is why, after a hard story, it helps to write the facts down while they are fresh. „Cancelled four dates in two months.“ „Disappeared for six days after an important conversation.“ „Waited six months for him to decide whether he wanted a relationship.“ „Every attempt to talk about my feelings ended in a conversation about how I am too sensitive.“

Three months later a person can argue with her own mood. Four cancelled dates, however, remain four cancelled dates.

There is one more interesting trap. If for years you have tied love to uncertainty, a consistent man may strike you as slightly dull at first. He writes when he said he would. He arrives on time. If something is wrong, he talks about it. There are no three days of silence followed by an „I'm thinking about you“ at 00:43 that makes your stomach turn a somersault.

In time you may tell yourself the butterflies are missing.

Check what you have been calling butterflies until now. If a good part of them were the questions „will he write“, „will he come“, „what does that mean“ and „where did he disappear to“, your body may simply be having its first normal week in a long while.

What the change looks like across the years

Picture a woman. In her first relationship the man disappears for three days. She waits, she worries, she excuses him, then he comes back and everything carries on. The story lasts a year and only after it ends does she understand how much of her life she spent waiting.

In time she meets someone else. When he too starts disappearing, this time after the second instance she says to herself: „I'm doing the same thing again.“ She still answers „no problem“ and the relationship goes on, but it no longer took her a year to see what was happening. It took two days.

The next man does the same and by now she says: „When you disappear for days without a word, that is a problem for me.“ Then she spends three hours wondering whether she went too far, but the sentence has been said.

Later still she meets someone who communicates the same way from the very beginning. She sees it on the second or third date and understands that a relationship like this would take her back to a place she already knows.

Before, the story took a year. Then a few months. Then weeks. In the end it can be over at the very start.

That is what change looks like. Not one enormous day on which a person wakes up different. More that the old plot is given less and less of her life.

And if he carries on the same way with someone else

That is entirely possible. A man who prefers a partner willing to wait may, after you, meet someone else who will wait. Someone who expects to be rescued may find a new rescuer. A man who avoids closeness may carry on in exactly the same way in his next relationship.

That is his life.

What matters for you is what happens at the next meeting of this kind. If you used to wait a year and now you see the situation after a month, your life is already different. If you used to carry someone's problems for two years and now you understand at the very start that he is looking for a partner to sort his life out, you already have a choice. If you used to stay silent until the break-up itself and now you speak at the first important mismatch, the story cannot possibly run exactly the same way.

The other person may carry on with his own repetition. You are no longer obliged to be the right partner for it.

A seven-day experiment

Over the coming week you can watch just one of your reactions. You do not need a new life by Sunday. It is enough to catch one moment in time.

If you are the one who waits, notice when you set aside a plan of your own because of someone else's vagueness. Friends invite you out on Saturday and you do not answer, because „he might suggest something“. This time, accept the invitation.

If you are the rescuer, notice when someone starts sharing a problem while you are already thinking about whom to recommend, where he should call and what exactly he should do. Ask him whether he wants advice or simply needs someone to listen.

If you are the one who understands, catch the moment when you start inventing the reasons on his behalf. Instead of analysing why he has not written for three days, you can ask him.

If you are the unnoticeable one, see how often you answer „whatever you like“ when you know perfectly well what you would prefer. Choose the film, the restaurant or the time.

If you are the strong one, ask someone for help before you have reached the edge of your strength.

After seven days many people are surprised to find that their old story turns up far more often in small situations than in big decisions. And that is actually good news, because it means you have many more chances to do something different.

If you already know what keeps repeating

Once you can say clearly „this keeps happening in my relationships“, the question becomes far more interesting. In Karma at FatedWays you can come in with exactly that kind of concrete question: „Why do I always wait for a man who cannot decide?“, „Why do I always become the one who fixes everything?“, „Why do I only say what I want once I am already ready to leave?“, „Why do different people take me to the same place?“

You then look at your own story with its particular people, years and situations, and you can see where the repetition starts, how you feed it in your present life, and which action would be a different one the next time it appears.

See what repeats in your life → Karma

If you are not yet sure whether the separate episodes are connected, start with Why the same thing keeps happening to you. If the main story is a love one and a sense of unfinished business keeps hanging around one particular person, go on to Karmic relationship: why this particular person. And if you want to check whether a similar theme is present in your birth numbers, read Karmic debt numbers: 13, 14, 16 and 19.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I see what I am doing and still repeat it?

Because the new way is learned more slowly than the understanding arrives. At first you grasp what happened weeks or months later. Then you see it the same day. In time you recognise it during the conversation itself, and that is when you can choose a different reaction.

Why does „never again“ not help me enough?

Because the next person may be entirely different while you make the same small concessions. It is more useful to know the moment when you start waiting, excusing, shrinking, or taking on someone else's responsibility.

How do I work out which part I play?

Look at how you react when you are afraid of losing someone. Do you give more time? Do you start helping more? Do you cut down your own wishes? Do you explain his behaviour on his behalf? Do you try to carry the relationship on your own? That is very often where the habit shows.

When does the change begin?

When a familiar situation gets a different answer from you. It can be a very small one: letting the other person suggest the next date, saying that something hurt you, asking for clarity, or leaving someone to solve his own problem.

What does it mean if I start saying what I want and he pulls away?

You get very important information earlier. If a relationship can only exist while your needs are small and convenient, sooner or later that will become a problem. The sooner you see it, the more time you save yourself.

Why do I mostly remember the good parts after a break-up?

With time the unpleasant details fade while the good moments stay vivid. That is why concrete notes help a great deal. „I felt awful“ is easily edited by memory. „Cancelled four dates in two months“ is far more specific.

How long does it take to change an old repetition?

There is no set span. What matters more is how quickly you start recognising it. If it used to take you a year and now you see it after a week, you are already ahead. The next step is to see it while it is happening and try something else.

How do I know the old story is over?

A situation like that turns up and it no longer costs you weeks of thinking, conversations and analysis. You see what is going on, you know how you feel and you decide much faster. Something that was once an enormous romantic mystery gradually becomes a perfectly ordinary choice.

Where at FatedWays can I look at my own recurring story?

In Karma you can come in with a particular situation that has already turned up more than once and look at where it starts, how you take part in it, and how you could react differently the next time it appears.
